Rules of Reduction
In his blog post "Robert's Rules of Reduction," Dr. Lustig argues that after dedicating 25 years to researching chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver disease, there are three reason for these health issues. They are insulin, sugar consumption, and the importance of fiber. Dr. Lustig believes that the primary culprit responsible for the increase in health problems is the consumption of processed foods, which are high in sugar, low fiber content, toxic, addictive, and available everywhere.
Dr. Lustig is committed to addressing the issue of reducing processed foods. He created two key strategies for reducing the negative impact of processed foods: limit their availability and minimizing the harm they cause. To minimize the harm, he has partnered with materials science engineers to develop an innovative fiber that can effectively absorb sugars in the intestine, thereby safeguarding the liver and promoting gut health. From this partnership, BioLumen Technologies, was born and generated interest from industry players like PepsiCo. Dr. Lustig insists he is dedicated to finding solutions to the problem. He emphasized that he has not gained any financial benefits with the food industry and that his only goal to help the public.
I will paraphrase the following paragraph:
Reducing availability is problematic, as the industry keeps pushing it, the public keeps demanding it, and the government keeps ignoring it. I’m doing what I can, most recently publishing a white paper to provide a roadmap for processed food reduction.
Decreasing availability causes challenges because the industry continues to promote it, there is continued demand from the public, and the government is not taking it seriously or providing any oversight. However, I'm actively taking steps to address this issue, including my recent effort of publishing a white paper that provides strategies on how to reduce processed foods.
