IDS 105 Project TemplateCultural Awareness GuidebookIdentify your chosen scenario. Disagreement with a colleague over work stylesPart One: Social Justice (Complete this section in Module Two.)• Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality in the scenario. Justice would mean that my colleague and I would receive what we deserve based on our actions
and merits. Fairness would mean that we both are treated equally or impartially without favoritism or discrimination. Equality would mean that we
both are treated the same regardless of our differences.Describe how bias can influence your perception of social justice in the scenario. it is possible that my perception of my international colleague’s work style could be influenced by my biases. I may unconsciously hold negative associations in my mind about their work style based on their nationality or other perceived characteristics. This could lead me to depersonalize them and make assumptions about their work style that are not accurate.• Describe how different narratives in society can impact your perception of social justice.Narratives can shape our perceptions, which form our realities, and our realities influence our choices and our actions. Therefore, there are many
different narratives in society that could change your consciousness of social justice by changing your beliefs, attitudes, and actions towards social topics. Narratives could also ask or add to dominant organizations of significance and ability. This is why it is important to despairingly look over the narratives
you are faced with and evaluate their prospective connections to social justice. • Describe the core principles of social justice in the scenario. We could apply these principles by first acknowledging that we both have different work styles and that it is important to respect each other’s work style. We could also try to understand each other’s work style and find a way
to work together that accommodates both styles. For example, I could create
a to-do list for myself but also be open to working on tasks as they come up. Similarly, my colleague could be open to creating a plan for the day but also be flexible enough to work on tasks as they come up as well.Part Two: Intercultural Communication and Collaboration• Describe how an awareness of other cultures can benefit interpersonal communication with people in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)I could try to learn more about their cultural background and how it affects their work style by askingthem questions such as I. How do you prioritize your tasks and manage your time? II. How do you cope with uncertainty in your work environment? III. How do you communicate your feedback to your group? This would allow me to identify the areas of similarity and differences in each
of our work styles and by having that discussion it would allow us to enhance
our teamwork with each other and can go over guidelines we each expect of each other and what each person does on the project. • Describe how exposure to diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)Uncovering diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication. You can improve communication and thought processing skills. Increase innovation and creativity by generating more ideas and perspectives. Promote a perception
of inclusion and belonging by welcoming and respecting other’s authenticity. Communication can produce as a challenge as well and can cause discomfort, mistrust, conflict, or misunderstanding. To overcome these challenges and communicate effectively you must acknowledge and appreciate the differences and similarities between each other. • Explain why
an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)An awareness of diversity is beneficial
to collaboration because it can Increase creativity and problem-solving by bringing different perspectives and insights together which can enhance decision-making, improve innovation, engagement, and performance. You also need to communicate your expectations and preferences clearly. So, to have a successful work environment you must find a middle ground that balances the planning and flexibility making sure to communicate clearly which will allow support for each other’s strengths. •Describe how you would
demonstrate cultural fluency in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Three.)I would communicate openly and respectfully with my colleagues about my work style preferences and expectations and listen to theirs. Try to find a common ground or a compromise that works for both of us.I can acknowledge and appreciate the strengths and benefits of my colleague’s work style, such as their flexibility, adaptability, and creativity. Also, share the advantages of my work style, such as my organization, planning, and efficiency.I could learn from other cultures that have different work practices, such as flat organizational structure, gender equity, group harmony and fitness, the right to disconnect, or connecting over coffee to see if I could incorporate some of these practices into my own work environment.I could seek feedback from my colleague on how I could improve my collaboration and performance.Be open to learning new ways of working and adjusting my work style when needed.
• Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness. (Complete this section in Module Three.)Cultural fluency could benefit my self-awareness by helping me recognize that my work style is not the only valid or effective one, and that my colleague’s work style may be influenced by their culturalbackground and preferences. I could also learn to appreciate the strengths and challenges of both of our work styles, and to find ways to compromise and collaborate with my colleague in a respectful and constructive manner. By being culturally fluent, I can avoid making negative judgments or assumptions about my colleague, and instead focus on the common goals and values that we share. This could improve my relationship with any colleague, as well as the quality of our work.Part Three: Communication Strategies to Navigate Conflict (Complete this section in Module Five.)• Describe the components of the conflict represented in the scenario. This would involve a conflict between my colleague and myself due to our different work styles. This conflict could be analyzed as:Task Conflict: This type of conflict arises from differences in how my colleague, and I approach work assignments. I would prefer to plan our tasks in advance and
have a detailed to-do list for each day, but my colleague would prefer to work on tasks as they come up without a specific plan. This difference in work styles has given tension and different expectations for how our work should be completed.Relationship Conflict: Relationship conflict is when there
are differences in personality, style, and mattersof taste. In this case, I would
perceive my colleague as disorganized and unreliable, while my colleague thinks I am too firm and stubborn. To address these conflicts and find a way to
work together effectively, it would be important to consider the following strategies:Open Communication: Engage in open and honest communication with my colleague to understand eachother’s perspectives, concerns, and expectations. This will help build trust and foster a better working relationship between us.Collaborative Problem-Solving: Instead of focusing on individual preferences, we could try to find common ground and develop a
solution together. We could Brainstorm different approaches and the sensitivity on certain aspects that could help extend the gap between our work styles.Respect and Flexibility: We should show respect for each other’s work styles and be willing to adapt and accommodate each other when necessary. We should recognize that there can be multiple ways to achieve the desired outcome and to be open to exploring different approaches.By implementing these strategies, we could create a more pleasant working environment and find a way to work together effectively despite our different
work styles.
Describe different interpersonal communication strategies that can be used in conflict resolution. It is important to find effective interpersonal communication strategies to resolve conflicts and work together effectively. Some strategies that could help are:Active Listening: Actively listening to my colleague’s perspective and trying to understand their point of view. This will help foster empathy and create an environment of mutual respect between us. Open Communication: Encourage open and honest communication between my colleague and myself. Share our concerns, expectations, and work preferences with each other. This will help in finding common ground and reaching an agreement.Cultivate Empathy: Try to put myself in my colleague’s shoes and understand their work style. I need to recognize that there are different approaches that could be equally valid and effective.Recognize Differences: I need to acknowledge and appreciate the differences in our work styles. Instead of viewing them as obstacles, consider
them as opportunities for growth and learning.Collaboration: I should find ways to collaborate on tasks and projects. This can help widen the gap between our work styles and create a sense of shared responsibility.Compromise: I need to be willing to agree and find the middle ground when necessary. This could involve finding a balance between planning ahead and being flexible in adapting to changes in circumstances. By implementing these strategies, I could encourage a positive working relationship with my colleague despite our different work styles.• Choose an appropriate communication strategy you would employ in the scenario.

Include an explanation of why you chose that communication strategy. It is important to establish an effective communication strategy that can help us both work together harmoniously. Given your preference for planning and your colleague’s inclination to work on tasks as they come up, I would recommend adopting a flexible and adaptive communication strategy. This is why I think this strategy would be beneficial:Open and Honest Communication: We can start by having an open and honest conversation with my colleague about our respective work styles. I could share my concerns and listen to their perspective. This will help us both understand each other better and find common ground.Identify Common Goals: We could
discuss the goals of the new project and identify areas where our work styles
could complement each other. Highlight the shared objectives and how working together canlead us to better outcomes.Establish Clear Expectations: We need to clearly define the expectations for each task and project milestone. Even though I prefer a detailed to-do list, my colleague may find it more helpful to have a general outline. We should find a middle ground that allows both of us to work efficiently, allowing us to accommodate each other’s preferences.
Flexibility in Planning: I should be open to adjusting my planning approach to
accommodate my colleague’s work style. I could consider incorporating flexibility into my daily plans by allowing room for unexpected tasks or changes in priorities.Collaborative Decision-Making: I could involve my colleague in the decision-making process whenever possible. Allowing them to feel valued and encourage their active participation in the project.Regular Check-Ins: I could schedule regular check-ins to discuss progress, address any concerns, and adjust anything if needed. This will help us both stay aligned and ensure that the project is on track.Focus on Results: We need to focus on the results and outcomes of our collaboration rather than getting caught up in the differences in our work styles. Celebrate successes together
and learn from the challenges that arise.By adopting a flexible and adaptive communication strategy, I could extend our different work styles and create a productive working relationship.• Describe the potential challenges of communication in the scenario. The difference in work styles between my colleague and I could lead to misunderstandings, frustration, and decreased productivity. The challenges we may face could include:Differing Expectations: My colleague and I have different expectations for how the work should be completed. My preference for a detailed to-do list clashes with my colleague’s preference for a more flexible approach. This could lead to confusion and frustration if expectations are not clearly communicated and aligned.Communication Breakdown: Miscommunication could occur when there is a lack of clarity about roles, responsibilities, and deadlines. Without a specific plan in place, it may be challenging to coordinate tasksand
ensure everyone is on the same page.Perception of Disorganization: I may perceive my colleague as disorganized and unreliable due to their preference
for working on tasks as they come up. This perception could create tension
and mistrust between team members.Rigidity vs Flexibility: My preference for planning and structure may be seen as rigidity by my colleague, while their preference for flexibility may be seen as lack of organization by me. But
finding a balance between these two approaches is crucial for effective collaboration. To overcome these challenges and work together effectively, it is important to establish clear lines of communication, set expectations, and find common ground. Some strategies I should consider are:Open Dialogue: Initiate an open and honest conversation with my colleague to discuss our work style differences, acknowledge each other’s strengths, and find areas of
agreement.Establish Clear Goals: We should define clear goals and objectives
for the project together. This will help align expectations and provide a shared understanding of what needs to be accomplished.
Regular Check-ins: Schedule regular check-ins to discuss progress, address any concerns or challenges, and ensure everyone is on track. This will help maintain open lines of communication and allow for adjustments if needed.Flexibility with Structure: We should find ways to incorporate flexibility into our planning process while still maintaining some structure. We
should consider allowing room for adjustments or unexpected tasks while ensuring key priorities are addressed.Respect Differences: We should recognize that different work styles can bring unique perspectives and strengths to the team. We should embrace diversity of thought and find ways
to leverage each other’s strengths.By adopting these strategies, we could foster effective communication, build trust, and create a collaborative work environment despite our different work styles.• Describe the benefits and challenges of using restorative practices to navigate the conflict in the scenario. Restorative practices aim to promote positive peace by building the
capacity within people to identify and solve their own problems. They are more effective and successful in resolving conflicts and interrupting violence.
By employing restorative approaches, I could learn how to resolve conflicts, take ownership of my actions, and develop a more compassionate understanding of others. These practices are not only effective at reducing suspensions and expulsions but also could help me build a restorative mindset, which is crucial for long-term success. Using restorative practices can help my colleague and I address the tension arising from our differentwork styles. By engaging in restorative-based dialogue, we could seek mutual understanding and respect, even if a serious conflict were to exist. This approach would encourage open communication, active listening, and empathy. This would provide us an opportunity to express our concerns, perspectives, and expectations in a safe and supportive environment. The benefits of using restorative practices could include: Conflict Resolution: Restorative practices could ease conflict resolution by allowing us to express our feelings and concerns openly. This can lead to a better understanding of each other’s work styles andexpectations. Improved Communication: We could engage in restorative communication that promotes effective communication by encouraging active listening and empathy. This would
allow us both to share our thoughts and concerns without judgment. Building
Trust: Restorative practices could help build trust between us by fostering an environment of respect and understanding. We could be actively participating in the process; we could demonstrate our willingness to work together despite our differences. Collaboration: We need to emphasize collaboration and problem-solving. When involving both parties in finding solutions, we create a work environment that accommodates both planning-
oriented and simple work styles.
However, it should be important to acknowledge that using restorative practices may also present some challenges: Time Commitment: We should engage in restorative-based dialogue that requires time and commitment from each other. It could involve multiple sessions or meetings to address the conflict adequately. Emotional Vulnerability: We should encourage each other to express our emotions openly. This level of emotional vulnerability could be challenging for some who are not accustomed to sharing their feelings. Resistance to Change: Implementing this may face resistance from each other that are resistant to change or prefer traditional conflict resolution methods. Skill Development: This would require specific skills such
as active listening, empathy, and effective communication. Developing these
skills could take time and practice. Considering the benefits of restorative practices in promoting conflict resolution, improved communication, trust-
building, and collaboration, this would be a suitable communication strategy for navigating the conflict between my colleague and me. I have learned that
by engaging in restorative-based dialogue, you can create an inclusive work environment that values both planning-oriented and spontaneous work styles.
