1.
Discuss the roles of verbal and nonverbal components in the communication process. (200 words max)
The verbal and nonverbal components are critical to ensure the functionality and efficiency in the communication process. The verbal components refer to written or spoken words while nonverbal components refer to components that are not encoded in words, including,
but not limited to, body language, eye contact and proximity (Dwyer, 2019, p.26). When verbal and nonverbal messages are congruent with each other, the process of communication becomes more effective as congruent messages reinforce the main idea from the sender (Dwyer, 2019). The role of nonverbal communication is reflected in its ability to help reinforce the verbal message as well as still hold communicative meaning. For
example, nonverbal communication at a universal level can ensure that the communication process is ongoing and that there is little impact by cultural noise in the exchange of messages. Regarding verbal communication, its main purpose is to share the information of the message, there are many models that represent the transmission of verbal messages and how they contribute to the communication process. All of which would not be executed
effectively without working in synergy with the non-verbal components of communication, both the verbal and nonverbal components of a message must be understood together to best receive the conveyed meanings of the message (Hall et. al, 2019). 2.
Identify one classification
of nonverbal communication
(from Week 3) evident in the case. Define it and use case-based evidence to explain how it is evident to you. (150 words max)
The use of paralinguistics in the communication process is evident in the case. Paralinguistics
is a classification of nonverbal communication that includes tone of voice and the rate of speaking (Dwyer, 2019). This component is reflected in both Kalyani and Ling’s methods of communication. Kalyani was in an argument with Tom, and her tone of voice gradually became louder and more emphasized to demonstrate that she was becoming agitated. Whereas Ling had responded to this altercation with a more calm and measured tone, which
demonstrated that she intended to resolve the conflict and did not want the individuals in the argument to feel attacked. Both forms of paralinguistics had communicative value and assisted in reinforcing their verbal message.
