Chapter 5 STC Reflection Directions: For each content module, you will complete ONE reflection on the texts and the lecture. Follow the format below. Each weekly reflection is worth 5 points.
STC self-reflections are graded for completion. In order to be considered complete, students must complete every section of the chart. Questions at the bottom of the STC self-reflection require a minimum of two-three complete sentences to be considered complete.
Define each term in your own words.
Then give an example how the term/ concept may be applied in an educational setting.

Square
What ‘squared’ with your thinking? That is, what ideas did you encounter in the reading that were consistent with what you already knew about teaching? The ideas around academic characteristics of individuals with LD I was generally aware of and the category descriptions. From past readings in this class, I was aware of IDEA and its effects on LD’s. I was also aware that environmental factors and genetics do play a role in the child’s learning disability or at least can have an effect to some or no extent. Therefore, I understood that prevalence of a LD is significantly higher in children where the
parent also had a LD.
Triangle
What ‘pointed’ you in new directions? What new ideas did you discover in the readings? Discuss the ways in which the readings provided new understandings about teaching and learning. State a quote (or portion) AND point out how it directs your thinking in new/novel ways. The biggest new idea I discovered with the social and emotional learning disabilities, I personally never really throughout about the effects of EBD on academics. The quote “ nonverbal learning disabilities” really stood out to me because it is easy for me to forget that not every disability is easily seen. It makes me direct my thinking to not stigmatizing disabilities, especially the disabilities you cannot see. However, it also points out why it is so easy to stigmatize a student that depicts the

stereotypic motions of a specific LD, and how dangerous that Is for the teacher to fall into. Therefore, as a teacher we need to make sure we are motiving kids and not having them fall into self-fulfilling prophecy or learned helplessness. Circle
What thoughts are still “circling” in your mind? This section will require the most thoughtful reflection. In it you will discuss the ways in which you think you could use the new information to build
on what you already know. In addition, you should write about the things that still puzzle you. Write about the questions it raised for you. Write questions about things you don’t understand, things that
make you think of your own learning, and especially things that you
relate to teaching and/or education. This module was on students with learning disabilities and all this new information can be used
every day when coming up with strategies for the classroom. I think overall I learned that there are a variety of learning disabilities, and they all vary from social, academic, emotional, and mixtures of all. One of the biggest questions I now have is what
is the difference between special needs and learning
disabilities? Where are students with disabilities served, is it truly mostly in a general classroom. Lastly, don’t we or should we have different expectations for students with disabilities?
1.
Before reading this week’s chapter and reviewing the PowerPoint, what were your perceptions about learning disabilities? How has your thinking changed throughout this week?
My perception on learning disabilities was that it was only reading, and math disabilities and I did not really realize or recognize any other forms of learning disabilities. After going through the material, I have realized that learning disabilities come in numerous forms
and numerous levels. The reasoning behind learning disabilities was very intriguing to me, I had never throughout by brain injury being a reason only genetic.

2.
As you think about the potential characteristics of individuals with SLD and your role as a teacher, what strategies would you use to support students in their learning?
I would break learning tasks into smaller shorter steps, present the information visually and orally, use diagrams, pictures, and graphic organizers, and provide independent practice. I believe one of the most important roles is that you model what you expect the students to do, being the example. Another strategy could be providing advance notice for assignments to help with anxiety and frustration. 3.
As described in Chapter 5, some students with SLD struggle with social competence, describe how you would create a classroom culture that supports inclusion and social communication development.
I would create a classroom that has the setting of everyone is included and made to feel welcome, students help each other, there is collaboration between the students and the students and teacher and have open communication between the students and the teacher. The first week of school is important to learn the students’ names, set aside time to lay down expectations and grounds rules for the classroom, connecting with the parents, and modeling what you expect to the students. 4.
Why is motivation important? How can intrinsic and extrinsic motivation effect student performance? Which do you think has the most impact on educational achievement?
Motivation is important for students to have because it pertains to their ability to achieve their personal goals and have the satisfaction.
Extrinsic motivation can affect the student’s motivation by making them competitive. Intrinsic motivation can affect the student’s motivation by fostering determination and the thirst for knowledge. I think intrinsic is the best for long term educational achievement, however I also believe that extrinsic motivation can lead to intrinsic motivation if correctly done.
