Group therapy is an interactive form of treatment where individuals gather in a group to address their mental health concerns and foster personal development. This dynamic approach provides a platform for participants to engage with peers facing similar struggles, offering a community of support and belonging. A skilled professional facilitates the group, leading them through diverse activities and dialogues that aid members in acquiring insights, honing coping mechanisms, and implementing beneficial life changes (Ezhumalai & et al.,2018). Facilitation of Group Processes: The social worker in the Levy video demonstrated several leadership skills, such as initiating group dynamics, analyzing data, and being proactive. By creating a safe and supportive environment, the social worker effectively established the group's atmosphere and steered its processes (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Her encouragement of open dialogue and active participation among group members fostered trust and unity (Walden University, 2022). Data Gathering and Assessment: Moreover, the social worker demonstrated adept skills in data collection and analysis by listening attentively to the group members' stories, identifying common themes and patterns in their experiences. She asked penetrating questions and provided insightful feedback, helping the group members to comprehend their own behaviors and beliefs. Through a comprehensive gathering of information about the group members' backgrounds and present challenges, the social worker developed a deep understanding of their needs and preferences (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Action: In light of the group members' expressed needs and concerns, the social worker took proactive measures by introducing targeted strategies. These included psychoeducation on coping mechanisms, stress management techniques, and communication strategies aimed at enhancing the group's overall well-being. This approach is supported by Toseland & Rivas (2017), who advocate for such educational interventions. Furthermore, the social worker facilitated goal- setting sessions, assisting members in formulating actionable plans to achieve their objectives, as recommended by Toseland & Rivas (2017). Recognizing avoidance behaviors such as excessive drinking as potential manifestations of unresolved trauma related to military service, the social worker was able to evaluate the group's coping methods and identify areas for improvement (Toseland & Rivas, 2016) Suggestion on Another Method for Initiation of Group Conversation One way in which the social worker could have initiated the group conversation differently is by incorporating a structured icebreaker activity at the beginning of the session. This could help to break the ice and create a more relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for the group members to engage in meaningful interactions.
