Why is it essential for professionals working in child development fields to develop cultural competence to understand best, support, and advocate for children of diverse backgrounds? Include a definition and your understanding of cultural competence. Support your viewpoint with at least three findings from scholarly research. Research findings may relate to cultural values, beliefs, and traditions, family language(s), Socioeconomic status (SES), poverty, immigration, prejudice, discrimination, education, or a relevant topic of your choice. When I was a child, my parents and grandparents taught me that everyone is different and
that no one is better than anyone else. Over the years, I have had friends from other backgrounds than my own. I always enjoyed going to their houses. They and their families had always taught me something new. Cultural Competence is the understanding and appreciation people have for others with different backgrounds and cultures. Also, how people interact with them is vital. I have had cultural competence for as long as I can remember. I love that no two people are the same. In the article "Promoting Educators' Cultural Competence To Better Serve Culturally Diverse Students," the NEA president said that if the teachers have the right skills, knowledge, and attitude toward diversity, the educational system will teach all children well. The country can
not only introduce some children. (Promoting Educators' Cultural Competence To Better Serve Culturally Diverse Students, (2008). The statement is 100% true. Our country is different from what it was several generations ago. All teachers must be familiar with and know how to teach diverse and English-speaking students simultaneously. Culturally diverse students may have different views and evaluate,
interpret, and react to what is said and done in the classroom. Communication skills are critical in any school. As a Psychologist, I first recommend embracing the families by involving them in the classroom as much as possible. The student's families can enlighten the class on their culture and
background. My second recommendation would be to have a support system for diverse students who need more support in the classroom. Children from diverse backgrounds may feel like they need more support. The support system could help the child feel more comfortable in the school. Keengwe, J. (2010).
