COMM 277 Week 3 Discussion
Conflict Setting
I recall an incident that occurred months ago while I was working in a medical spa and comprised of several women. HIPAA regulations must still be adhered to in order to preserve confidentiality because the medspa is still included under the healthcare industry. The office has a policy in place to make sure that consent is obtained before any procedure is carried out in case
their "before and after" photos are shared on the office's social media accounts. But one of the estheticians decided they wanted to display on the company's social media despite forgetting to obtain a signed consent. Our boss had to intervene swiftly and order the removal of the photograph. The employee took down the picture, but she decided to post it on her own social media and said that it was her work to show off and that the social media was a reflection of her. Due to the fact that one of their clients was in the photo, having undergone the procedure there, my manager was required to inform her that patient confidentiality was still being violated. The employee was at first hesitant, but after greater thought and explanation, she realized that it would be best to remove the picture until a confidentiality agreement was signed.
Insight
Workplace conflicts are inevitable; they are going to happen whether we like it or not. When we are called on anything, we often become defensive and even confrontational (McLean, 2018, pp. 444–445). One of the best ways, in my opinion, to prevent an unhealthy work atmosphere is through communication. According to a study, companies should offer conflict resolution training to employees (Kazemi et al., 2022). These training classes would be beneficial for management and employees to accept criticism without taking it personally.
