3 Introduction: “Leading with Cultural Intelligence: The Real Secret to Success” is a book authored by David Livermore, an expert in cultural intelligence and global leadership. The central thesis of the book revolves around the concept of cultural intelligence (CQ) and its significance in today’s globalized world. Livermore argues that traditional forms of intelligence, such as IQ and EQ, are no longer sufficient for effective leadership in diverse and multicultural environments. Instead, he suggests that individuals and organizations must develop cultural intelligence to navigate the complexities of working across different cultures successfully. Livermore defines cultural intelligence as the capability to function effectively in culturally diverse settings by understanding and adapting to various cultural norms, values, and behaviors. 1 He emphasizes the importance of developing four key capabilities: CQ drive (motivation), CQ knowledge (cognition), CQ strategy (meta-cognition), and CQ action (behavior). 2 By honing these capabilities, individuals can enhance their ability to lead effectively in cross-cultural contexts. The book provides practical strategies, tools, and case studies to help readers enhance their cultural intelligence and apply it in real-world situations. Livermore highlights the benefits of cultural intelligence, such as improved communication, collaboration, decision-making, and overall performance in diverse teams and organizations. He also addresses common challenges faced by leaders operating in multicultural environments and offers insights on how to overcome them. Livermore’s work underscores the importance of cultural intelligence as a critical skill for leaders in today’s interconnected world.
