Introduction
David Livermore defines cultural intelligence (CQ) as “the capability to function effectively across national, ethnic, and organizational cultures.”
1
When looking at this definition one can see that an assessment of one’s cultural intelligence can be useful in helping a leader lead across different cultures. Moreover, if the leader takes the information that is obtained from the assessment, they can better adjust their leadership for success. Furthermore, leading is not just about telling people what to do, it is more about guiding people to a common goal regardless of their background. The question then becomes what is a CQ assessment?
A CQ assessment is an assessment that measures a person’s CQ in four areas and 13 sub-
dimensions. These areas are:
2
1.
CQ Drive- which measures your level of persistence, and confidence during multicultural interactions.
2.
CQ Knowledge- which measures your understanding about how cultures are similar and different.
3.
CQ Strategy- which measures your awareness and ability to plan for multicultural interactions.
4.
CQ Action- which measures your ability to adapt when relating and working in multicultural contexts.
Therefore, if one takes the CQ assessment they will have “a more reliable, consistent way to predict how you will lead across cultures than your personality, age, gender, where you’re from, or emotional intelligence.”
3
In this paper I will give an evaluation on my personal CQ evaluation as well as look at my strengths and my weakness in the four areas of CQ. Moreover, I will provide a plan on how I can improve in my area of weakness.

CQ Assessment Results
When looking at the results of my CQ assessment I was not really shocked at the results but more so intrigued by them. In the area I would score high in I scored low and the area that I thought would be a weakness was my strength. Therefore, I am going to go over those areas of strength.
Strength:
My area of strength from the CQ assessment was in CQ Strategy in which I scored a 98. The first part of CQ Strategy is using our cultural understanding (CQ Knowledge) to plan for an interaction or project taking place in a different cultural environment.
4
Many leaders would benefit from CQ Strategy because it allows them to become aware of what they are doing cross-
culturally. Therefore, looking at my scores in the CQ Strategy in the sub-dimension areas of planning, awareness, and checking to which I scored 98 in each sub-dimension. In the sub-dimension of Planning Livermore gave 4 questions on should ask when planning a one-on-one cross-culture interaction:
5
1.
What kind of small talk, if any, is appropriate for a person from this culture and for this individual?
2.
Who should initiate the transition from small talk into business?
3.
How will I get to action steps in this meeting?
4.
How much direction should I provide?
In terms of ministry these questions can be a wonderful way to ensure that I have a productive conversation and that understanding is gained. Moreover, when dealing with other cultures it is important that one tries to understand who they are dealing with. In ministry we encounter 4

5
various cultures and to have a dialogue with them we must plan how we would like the conversation to go. In the sub-dimension of Awareness Livermore states: The ability to be aware- of one’s self, others, and a situation- is what really makes the difference between those who lead with cultural intelligence and those who don’t.
6
Having self-awareness will allow one to have the ability to realize where they need to improve and when to make changes. Many people lack this skill thus they are the ones who have a hard time adapting to various situations and cultures. These people tend to have a hard time, in my opinion, accepting different cultural norms. Moreover, they tend to expect everyone to think, and act like them.
Checking, is the final dimension of CQ Strategy, is looping back to consider whether the plan we have developed for a particular situation works.
7
This is what we should be doing after each interaction we have. This is true in the church and in the secular world. Checking is the most important aspect of CQ Strategy because it gives you instant feedback about the interaction. Weakness:
The area that I was most weak in was that of CQ Knowledge. I scored 78 in this area. My sub-
dimensions scares are as follows: Business-98, Values & Norms-95, Socio-linguistic-26, and Leadership-90. When looking at the scores I had to put them into perspective. On one hand I have a low overall score due to me scoring low in the sub-dimension of Socio-linguistic. On the other hand, my overall score is still considered a high level. Therefore, based on these scores show that I have to be intentional in working to improve my scores.

Conclusion
In conclusion, when I look at my CQ Assessment scores although I was surprised by my rankings, I can say that I was not shocked. When I think about my time as a police officer and working in some form of law enforcement and education, the numbers are where I think they should be. As a police officer Strategy was important, many times I faced situations that afterwards I had to review what happened and improve my tactics. I had to also be aware of what was going on around thus, making me sweat the small stuff. I also had to work on my plan for future encounters. Furthermore, looking at the definitions of the sub-dimension for CQ Knowledge, I realize that again the reason I have high scores in most of the areas is due to my experiences as a police officer. I worked hard in each area to improve and will continue to do so. One sub-dimension area that I will focus on is that of the Socio-linguistic area. My plan for improvement is to learn Spanish because I live in an area with a high Hispanic population. Moreover, my children are learning Spanish thus we can make it a family project. Which will help us in ministering.
Local and Intercultural Communication Assessment
Current Ministry:
When looking at the effectiveness of ministry engagement in the local community across cultural norms I will look at how effective my church is at reaching out to other cultures. A brief description of my church is we are a small black church that is of diverse social backgrounds. We are located outside of a major city in Tennessee. I serve as an associate minister of the church. I just joined the ministry at the start of the year; thus, I am learning about how the church works.

Yet, the pastor of the church has given me some duties as far as what ministries I would like to work. Therefore, I will be joining the Spanish education class to learn Spanish to evangelize to the large Hispanic population we have here. Furthermore, I would like to have events that will seek to reach others who are of different cultural backgrounds. Global (Intercultural) Ministry:
In the article, Globalisation of Missions: An Exegesis on the Great Commission (Mt 28:18-20), Kgatle stated: Jesus intensified and accelerated social exchanges and activities that goes beyond human history.
8
That will be the focus on the Spanish Outreach program. We will focus on how we can reach many who are believers and need to be accepted within the local church community. Moreover, the ministry will reach out to Hispanic churches to bridge the gap between our church and other churches.
Moreover, I feel that the first thing we will do in the minister is work on the “cultural norms” or the collective expectations of what constitutes proper or improper behavior in a given interaction scene.
9
Once this is done, we can be better equipped to share the Gospel with those outside our own culture. Moreover, I feel that one reason we as a church are capable of being successful in this endeavor is because as Chang advised we accept that there will be a cultural shock. Moreover, we, as a church, have a leader who knows, “Culture shock is a process, a journey, and it can be the gate to so many treasures we have yet to unfold.”

An Assessment of Our Ministry:
When I look at my churches outreach and the commitment we to reaching to diverse cultures, I see God working within our church. We have a member who is teaching Spanish and during her class she uses the Bible to help people be able to share the Word of God. Furthermore, our church has a partnership with the local fire department and police department to reach the lost. We are in the process of starting a program in which we are helping young men who are leaving a local youth home to have bags to carry their belongs, so they do not look or feel like they are prisoners.
Therefore, I believe that as a church we have worked diligently to be a place where everyone is welcomed. We are afraid to proclaim the Gospel and we do so boldly. We understand that the Great Commission was not a suggestion for some but for all. We try to embody this belief in how we worship and share. As William Fay stated in his book, Sharing Jesus Without Fear,
We should be excited about sharing our faith.
