Portfolio Task #1: Reading Comprehension (5%)
Your Task:
The following questions ask you to demonstrate your understanding of “Food for Thought” by Marie Fitrion, and your ability to use the reading comprehension terms that we have explored in Week 2. Your responses will also help your instructor to provide constructive feedback and to guide your ongoing progress Write your responses in the text boxes provided. The boxes will expand if you want to write more than the space provided. Use “Save As” to give the file a new name after you
begin to ensure that you do not accidentally submit the blank template for grading. 1.
Identify the Topic
:
What is the text about? (1 point)
The text is about how a woman came to an understanding of her biracial identity by learning about the history throughout food and talking to other people about it. As she was sharing her thoughts, she was also gaining knowledge about herself.
2.
Identify the Thesis
:
What is the author of this text saying? (1 point)
The author in my opinion is saying that if you are learning about someone’s heritage or your own heritage it’s easier to understand yourself and anyone else as a person.
3.
Identify the Purpose
What is the author of this text trying to accomplish or achieve by writing and publishing this text? Refer to one section of the text to support your interpretation (2 points)
On page 7 the last paragraph it stated, “I want to continue to encourage people
to tell their stories, to listen and learn from each other.” That makes me believe that the author is trying to make people learn each other’s backgrounds, so we have a better understanding of each other.
2
Now imagine that Marie Fitrion wrote a different kind of text instead of this one: a letter, like “Dear Dad” by Taslim Jaffer. And, like “Dear Dad,” imagine that the intended audience of Marie Fitrion’s letter is her Haitian father (and grandmother, too!). 4.
Identify the Purpose
: What might the purpose of this new letter be? (1 point)
The purpose of the new letter might be to explain the authors story of disconnecting and reconnecting to her biracial identity.
5.
Consider Support
: Would the supporting details and examples change in this new letter? How? Why? (2 points)
I don’t think the supporting details or example would change in this letter because the author talks about the disconnect from her heritage and how she reconnected with it. She also shares how she and her husband connected with her biracial identity.
6.
Consider Voice
: Would Fitrion’s tone and diction change in this new letter? How? Why? (2 points)
Fitrion’s voice in this letter was not formal. If in the new letter she is writing to her father and grandmother, she would not need to use a formal voice. Therefore, her tone of voice wouldn’t need to change.
7.
Consider Title
: What would be an appropriate title for this new letter? (1 point)
A good title may be, “How I Found my Haitian and Scottish Identity.”
