Application Analysis: Online Communication
This week you will analyze an article published by Mary Burns illustrating how to create an online course that promotes communication and collaboration. Parts may look familiar to what you have experienced so far. Review the article, Designing Effective Online Courses, located in your Learning Materials. The article discusses ten instructional design strategies that can be used in
online learning.
1) Summarize the 5 strategies that are or may be used in this course: (discussion, self-directed learning, small group work, project, and collaborative learning). 2) Describe how they are or may be used in the course. This assignment requires you to look ahead (not a bad thing to do in any course so you know what is ahead) as well as think back to the previous modules. 3) How is communication different in this online learning environment than a traditional classroom? How do you adjust to this communication channel?
The five types of strategies used in online learning are discussion, self-
directed learning, small group work, projects and collaborative learning. These
strategies facilitate active engagement and collaboration of students in the learning process. Here is a more detailed explanation of each of the five strategies mentioned. Discussion questions play an important part in interacting with the professor and classmates. It allows us to use our options, exchange ideas with one another and seek clear information. With small group work this helps the student to work together on anytype of class work given. Teamwork helps students develop important skills like communication, leadership, resolve conflict and the sharing of multiple viewpoints. Self-
Directed learning helps the student gain responsibility for online work. There is
more use for self-directed learning through online, students have their own
time to work at their own pace, it also helps manage their time effectively. Project learning helps students gain hands-on experience by understanding projects relevant to the course work. They also help students by developing problem-solving skills, creativity, and getting a deeper engagement. Collaborative learning emphasizes the importance of teamwork and reaching a common goal. With online class work it helps give feedback, group projects, with a sense of community and shared learning is important. Using these strategies with online mutual can create critical thinking, active participation, and communication styles among the students. Elearning is used mostly during this course because it helps me learn at my own pace. The majority elearning allows the student to divide their coursework as they see fit. When we are doing our discussion question for the module it makes us share our thoughts and ideas with the instructor and classmates.
Students can engage in feedback and support their fellow classmates. Students must stay organized and disciplined to keep up with assignments and participate in online discussions. In an online environment, communication happens through digital
platforms such as messaging, email, and discussion boards.
