Genre Analysis Worksheet
To complete this genre analysis worksheet, choose three genre samples from the assignment instructions. Read each one, taking notes as you go, with the following questions in mind. Complete this analysis worksheet for each of the three genres you chose. When you submit this file, follow the directions in the assignment for your reflection paragraph that should accompany this worksheet.
Introduction: For this task, we were instructed to evaluate the efficacy of three distinct writing genres by examining their purpose, intended audience, writing technique, and document organization. I have selected three distinct writing genres: care plans, business plans, and laboratory reports. I can draw analogies between the papers I have encountered professionally, such as troubleshooting/repair plans, training project plans, and criticisms. Upon conducting thorough research on each genre, I have observed significant variations in the simplicity, efficacy, and detail levels across different genres and conditions. Each component relies on the criteria mentioned in this worksheet: voice, target audience, and paper aim. If the three characteristics are not accurately identified and implemented in the paper, it can rapidly lose effectiveness. I can use my acquired knowledge to guarantee that every written work I produce or assess possesses a distinct and precise target audience and an appropriate tone. It successfully communicates and accomplishes its intended objective, enhancing the quality of documentation and communication in my assignments and professional settings.
Title, author, and genre of the work
Who is the target audience? How do you know? What do you see as the document’s purpose? (Why was it written?)
How is the work organized? What sections does it include? How does this structure reflect the document’s audience and purpose?
How is the document
formatted? Are there
traditional paragraphs, pictures, bullets, tables, parenthetical citations, footnotes, etc.? How do the formatting choices reflect the document’s audience
and purpose?
Describe the voice (tone and style) of the work. What kinds
of word choices do you see? Did the author use specialized vocabulary? How do these style choices reflect the document’s audience
and purpose?
What is the document about? What content (ideas, arguments, thoughts,
etc.) does it include? How do the organization, formatting, and voice
help or hinder the communication of the content?
