Discussion 10-1
I was very excited to take this course. I love all things higher education but never really know what goes on behind the scenes. I will always see myself working in higher education, preferably in the admissions department. I chose Northern Illinois University (NIU) for my final projected. I used to work in the NIU admissions department as a freshman admissions counselor. I always knew NIU was a big state school, I guess I never realized how big and how much one department effects another. For example, if admissions doesn’t bring in a decent size class, budgets and salaries are effected, some buildings could close down for the year because there is no one to occupy them, now that those buildings are closed, the NIU bus service will need to be re-routed, and so on. Having a SEM plan will ensure that every department is on the same page with the same goals. I have worked in admissions for about 10 years now. I’d like to think I know a lot about how this specific office functions, but I was wrong. What goes behind the scenes is so much more than I imagined. Admissions is the center of the university. When one thing changes it effects the admissions office and how they market the school. If a program is discontinued, admissions needs to know so they stop marketing it, they need to change all marketing materials, the financial aid office needs to be informed, prospective students need to be made aware, current students need to understand how this will affect them, and more. I always think it is important to have goals. Even if that goal is just to increase the student population by one student. I can see myself using a SEM plan in the future as I move up in the admissions field and maybe have to create one of my own. You have to put yourself in other people’s shoes, if something like
discontinuing a program, or adding a program affects your job, it is important to take a step back and ask yourself, who else is this effecting? Once a SEM plan is in place, it is important to communicate that with the proper stakeholders for a successful university. 10-2
As a former admission counselor at Northern Illinois University (NIU), I was excited to go back and dig deeper into the institution. Luckily, NIU has a great website where you can easily find documents, data and plans with a little digging. NIU currently was a great SEM plan in place. After surveying their students, they really took into consideration the students concern. Also in regards to the faculty, their main concern was having a transition program to help with retention numbers. That is now built into NIU’s SEM plan to be developed over the next 3 years. Again, a retention program needs to be built. NIU is a very transfer heavy university. If NIU developed a transition program over the summer, I think it would encourage more students to start there as freshman instead of attending a community college first. I was surprised to find NIU did not have a large amount of Asian-American students. To me, NIU is such a diverse school and have a lot of international students. NIU should look to recruit in heavier Asian-American communities around the mid-west to open that door. They could also provide scholarships to encourage students of that ethnicity to apply.
NIU also offers a good amount of online programs, but they could offer more. This is in development in their current SEM plan. I have mentioned before that NIU recently lost their athletic training accreditation. I think instead of spending the time and money to get that accreditation back, they should
look into other programs to offer. I enjoyed reading about all your chosen institutions, and hope to see you in future classes.
