Describe
1.
How does Rise Up and Care illustrate the application of post-development theory? Rise up and Care shows post-development theory through a bottom-up approach to development. By investing within local pre-existing non-profits, the project works to
show the value in rejecting the one-size-fits-all approach to development that often comes from foreign investment into countries. 2.
In what ways might it depart from the post-development perspective?
Rise Up and Care still places an impact on the role of the global north in development. People in the global north (the project leaders) are still making the selections for which organizations are going to be supported with investments, which means that they are still playing a major role in what is being developed

3.
Given our discussion of post-development theory, what problems do you think a project
such as Rise Up and Care might encounter? What might be some of the drawbacks of the
project?
Since Rise Up and Care relies mainly on investments, there may be issues in obtaining consistent funding. People like to feel like they are directly contributing to a cause, so a project like Rise Up and Care might have difficulty finding support as a large motivator for contribution is typically personal involvement (i.e. a CV/resume point). Additionally, the selection of the beneficiaries of this project may or may not help the global south, as the selection committee is made up of people from the global north. Another factor that might present challenges is competition from preexisting groups. Other new non-profits from organizations with different philosophies might be competing for the same investment resources and constituents. Finally, these projects produce relatively small interventions, so the scale of the project might make it difficult to measure actual impact. Construct (in groups)

You read two articles on “voluntourism.” Building on our discussion of post-
development theory, and on what you have learned about the Rise Up and Care project, propose alternative ways of structuring these voluntourism programs in order to make them more developmentally beneficial for Global South communities. One of the main things that stuck out to me from the “voluntourism” articles was the section:
I don't want a little girl in Ghana, or Sri Lanka, or Indonesia to think of me when she wakes up each morning. I don't want her to thank me for her education or medical care or new clothes. Even if I am providing the funds to get the ball rolling, I want her to think about her teacher, community leader, or mother. I want her to have a hero who she can relate to - who looks like her, is part of her culture, speaks her language, and who she might bump into on the way to school one morning.
Perhaps by learning from this idea, we can see that there would be more value in educating and investing in community members in the global south than sending over educated people from the global north. By reconstructing these projects to be localized through actual personal investment in community leaders, there is room for actual positive impact into the next generation.
