Chapter 8 Review Questions ECE 109
1. Discuss three important reasons for face-to-face communication between
teachers and parents.
Communication with teachers and the parents of students is essential for the growth and success
of their students inside the classroom and also outside of class. I feel that face-to-face
communication between parents and their child’s teacher can help create respect for the teacher,
student, and parents. Body language is important because a face-to-face conference will give the
teacher the parent's impression of how her child is doing, once the teacher talks about how their
child is acting, working, playing, taking directions and instructions. Most times parents feel
offended when the teacher tries to explain their child’s behavior and try to defend their child and
that's where the teacher asks questions and the parent answers with confidence, it's about feeling
comfortable and trust between parents and their child's teacher. Unfortunately, not all parents can
meet their child’s teacher face to face, due to work, and that’s where technology comes in. Video
conferences like Zoom and Google Classroom can be very beneficial ways for parents and
teachers to meet face-to-face instead of meeting in person. They can be a lifesaver for a busy
parent, who still wants to meet their child's teacher in face-to-face conversation. For example,
my younger sister is in 6th grade and teachers have parent-teacher conferences, and give the
parents options whether in person or via Zoom. Since my mother works and cannot come in
person, she relies on Zoom for that personal feel to a face-to-face conference.
2. Discuss three challenges to face-to-face communication between teachers and
parents.
Cultural differences between parents who speak another language can make it hard for teachers
and parents to stay on the same page of communication because the parent does not speak
English. Most often a translator is not available in the school. Schools have a hard time reaching
out to families mainly because there are not enough methods of communication. Sometimes,
parents, have their children translate for them, but I feel that’s not good because what if the
teacher wants to discuss something about the child's behaviors, and whatnot with the child being
there it feels awkward for the student. Parents that work there’s not enough time for them to meet
their child’s teacher or are not available to come in for conferences. Some parents due to their
work schedule choose a different day to meet their child's teacher early in the morning before
school starts. I truly believe that it has to do with the language barrier, I say this because my
grandmother does not speak English and when she had to meet her child’s teacher she would
always take my mom to translate.
3. Discuss three positive aspects of using electronic communication and/or social
media with families.
Email: Parents can reach out via email at any time for a quick way to ask questions and concerns. Forms
of communication between parents and themselves, parents who have questions can email, call,
or send messages through apps such as Parent Square and Seesaw.
Zoom/Google Classroom:
Unfortunately, not all parents can meet their child’s teacher face to
face, due to work, and that’s where technology comes in. Video conferences like Zoom and
Google Classroom can be very beneficial ways for parents and teachers to meet face-to-face
instead of meeting in person.
Newsletter: A weekly newsletter will be created to keep families updated about current events
within the classroom and educational institutions. This will help act as a weekly schedule to
inform parents what assignments their child will be working on so the parents can check their
child's work. Parent/Student Orientation:
Parents will receive an invitation to join parent/teacher orientation
the first week of school. During orientation the teacher introduces herself, and the parent and the
child familiarize themselves with the classroom. The teacher introduces forms of communication
between parents and herself, parents who have questions can email, call, or send messages
through via apps such as Parent Square and Seesaw. Phone: Parents can call the teacher after school hours via the school phone. This is a good way
for parents and teachers to communicate about matters regarding brief questions that relate to the
classroom and questions about their child.
4. Discuss three challenges and/or cautions for using electronic communication
and/or social media with families.
There are positive and negative effects of social media on communication with families. The
word media refers to interactions among people who share or exchange information and ideas in
existing communities. Social media can help families stay connected, and it's important to
always use social media in moderation and plan face-to-face communication in meaningful
ways. Many young adults and teenagers use social media to communicate with family, friends,
and sometimes strangers. Social media can make it difficult for families to have positive face-to-
face conversations. Instead of talking to each other in person, families can rely on social media to
communicate, which can cause misunderstandings and miscommunication. I say this because at
any given time there’s identity theft, cyberbullying, and inappropriate images and messages. It
can affect real-life communication in ways such as personal expression, and our expectations of
others. Social media contains many ways to make it easier to communicate in everyday life, but
the idea of using it to communicate isn’t always the best solution.
