SCI 100 Module Two Activity Template: Scientific Approaches and Questions
Instructions
Address the following about your chosen scientific news story. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Use the module overview and resources for assistance. You do not need to conduct outside research.
Part One
Identify an approach to scientific research
addressed in the chosen news story.
The chosen news story highlights an approach to scientific research known as collaborative research or international collaboration. In this study, researchers from more than 70 institutions around the world, including the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the University of Cambridge, joined forces to investigate the genetic factors influencing the severity of multiple sclerosis (MS). The International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium (IMSGC) and The Multiple MS Consortium, two large MS research consortia, combined their data and resources to conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving over 12,000 people with MS. By pooling their data and expertise, the researchers were able to analyze a large number of genetic variants and identify the first genetic marker associated with faster disease progression in MS. This collaborative research approach allowed researchers to overcome the limitations of individual studies and gain a broader perspective on the complex genetic factors underlying MS severity. By working together, scientists from different institutions and countries were able to contribute their unique insights and resources, ultimately leading to a significant breakthrough in understanding and potentially treating the progression of MS. Collaborative research is an important approach in scientific research as it fosters the sharing of knowledge, expertise, and resources among researchers from different backgrounds and institutions. It enables large-scale studies, such as GWAS, which require a diverse and extensive dataset to draw meaningful conclusions. By collaborating, researchers can tackle complex scientific questions more effectively and make progress that may not be possible through individual efforts
alone.
Part Two
Draft two research questions you are interested in asking about the main idea of your news story.
Ensure that both of your questions are measurable
and focused
.
1.
Research Question 1: How does the presence of the identified genetic variant (rs10191320) affect the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS) in terms of the time it takes for individuals to require a walking aid?
2.
Research Question 2: What specific pathological changes occur in the gray and white matter of the brain in individuals with MS who are homozygous carriers or double carriers of the genetic variant (rs10191320) compared to those without this genetic variation?
