Briefly describe the activities you completed as a part of your Service Learning. Did the activities happen over multiple days? On one occasion?
On February 19, 2024, I went to a workshop to help me understand the trauma children experience when they have been victims of sex trafficking. This workshop was a 2 hour seminar hosted by the Texas Department of Family Protective Servies.
How does this Service Learning experience relate to your academic/career goals?
This service learning relates to my learning goals because I am working towards becoming a teacher. I currently work as a teaching assistant, and we encounter all types of children who are encountering extreme situations of homelessness, eviction, domestic violence, and so much more. Being familiar with these things and how to handle sensitive situations as such is always a plus. Why is/was there a need for your service? What do you perceive as the underlying issue, and why does it exist?
I felt a need to learn more about this dynamic of special situations in the school setting because when children are placed in foster care, we receive them without knowing their background. So, now that I have been trained to interact with them and recognize triggers, I can create an inclusive learning environment for them.
How is what you are studying in school preparing you to address this issue? How does your future profession/field connect to this issue? What is your responsibility to address this issue as a person involved in your future career field?
I am studying a variety of courses to broaden my perspective on knowledge so that I don’t have a boxed-
in mentality when it comes to teaching. In my future career as a teacher, I will be afforded the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of children from all walks of life. Therefore, I must be able to
address sensitive issues with tact and poise to create an inclusive learning environment.
What personal qualities (e.g. leadership, communication skills, compassion, etc.) have you developed through service learning? In what ways do you anticipate these qualities will help you in the future?
I have learned how to effectively communicate the needs of children who can't speak up for themselves. I have also become more intuitive, knowing when things have changed, and I need to talk to my students
to find out what is making them act differently. In addition to great communication skills, I have become more empathetic and compassionate toward the children and people I encounter.
