Name: Austin Vangelena 1) How has procrastinating benefited you in the past? 2) How might procrastinating impact your ability to show up and contribute in this graduate program? 3) Why might the disposition of engagement be important for professionals in the field of counseling to embody? Please discuss at least three ways. 1) Benefits of Procrastination in the Past: Procrastination may have benefited me in the past by allowing me to engage in divergent thinking and creative problem-solving. Delaying a task can give my mind time to subconsciously process information and come up with innovative solutions. Procrastination can also serve as a form of self-regulation, where I prioritize tasks based on their urgency and importance. In some cases, putting off less critical tasks can lead to a greater focus on more pressing matters for myself. For some people, procrastination may act as a source of motivation. The pressure of an impending deadline can push people to work efficiently and produce high-quality outcomes. 2) Impact of Procrastination on My Graduate Program Performance: Procrastination can negatively impact my ability to show up and contribute effectively in this graduate program. If I delay assignments and my studying it can lead to increased stress, rushed work, and lower-quality results. Procrastination may result in me having missed deadlines, incomplete tasks, or subpar academic performance, affecting my overall learning experience and potential for success in this program. If I procrastinate I may struggle to manage my time effectively, leading me to have feelings of being overwhelmed, disorganized, and difficulty balancing academic responsibilities with other commitments such as my rotations in medical school. 3) Importance of the Disposition of Engagement for Counseling Professionals: Engagement is vital for professionals in the field of counseling as it fosters a deep connection with clients, promotes active listening,
and enhances the therapeutic relationship. An engaged counselor demonstrates empathy, presence, and attentiveness, creating a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Engagement allows counselors to build trust with clients, collaborate on treatment goals, and empower individuals to make positive changes in their lives. By demonstrating genuine interest and involvement in the therapeutic process, counselors can facilitate meaningful growth and transformation in their clients. In summary, while procrastination may have its benefits in certain contexts, it can have detrimental effects on academic performance, particularly in a rigorous graduate program such as this. The disposition of engagement is essential for professionals in the field of counseling as it cultivates a meaningful connection with clients, enhances the therapeutic process, and contributes to positive outcomes in counseling interventions. In developing our Counselor Identity we have to shift our thought processes from what may have worked in "certain contexts" in order to be mindful and professional. Being mindful of how we want to be perceived as a professional by our peers and our clients is key. Mindful and meaningful connections are foundational in the efficacy of our work. Thank you for sharing :) ReplyReply to Comment o Collapse Subdiscussion Lindsey Watts Lindsey Watts Mar 5, 2024Mar 5 at 3:55pm Procrastinating can be good in certain situations. (Worden, 2018, p. 83) Week One DQ  How has procrastinating benefited you in the past? •     I have never been a procrastinator in my life. I have always been an individual who gets things done on time. Procrastinating only slows down the process of getting ahead and achieving one's goals. I would never advise procrastinating to anyone because it only prolongs the journey of success.  How might procrastinating impact your ability to show up and contribute to this graduate program? •     My view of procrastinating is that this will prohibit your success in any graduate program. Waiting and prolonging the necessary tasks that need to be done will only create more challenges for you, especially as a graduate student. Procrastinating in a graduate program will impact you as a student and, most importantly, your work.  Why might the disposition of engagement be necessary for professionals in counseling to embody? Please discuss at least three ways. •     The disposition of engagement is vital for counselors to embody because we advocate, support, and actively listen to our clients. Personalities reflect one's attitudes and beliefs, not directly visible but inferred from one's actions. Indeed, this is true; advocating for our clients is essential, and there are several ways that, as counselors, we can do that effectively and efficiently. How can we effectively advocate for our clients through professional engagement by establishing a therapeutic rapport with our clients and building the working alliance as mentioned in interpersonal psychotherapy. Secondly, we can make sure we have compelling and efficient communication, establishing a solid foundation of open communication, ensuring our clients that we are here to support them, and having an open line of communication that gives them that reassurance. Lastly, what I utilize the most in my current role is active listening; listening is the key to counseling, and clients love and appreciate the thought that they are really being heard and not just tolerated. Procrastination has a hyper activity dreadful sometimes euphoric high in my life. I get an instant gratification of rushing and completing a task under pressure. Sometimes great work and outcomes have be been produce for me or that is what I think it great. How might procrastinating impact your ability to show up and contribute in graduate program? Procrastination can have can have a negative impact on my graduate studies. Rushing and not being thoughtful while completing work could produce mistakes and incomplete work. The rush and high I get from this can distract me from meeting deadlines for assignments. Prolonging the work does not allow me time to read and research my subject. Without reading or researching the subject could result in me not gaining or demonstrating my knowledge of the course work. My goal is to reduce procrastination as much as possible. I would do this by staying head of the deadline. Pacing myself with reading and writing. Create short term goals and taking breaks in between each part of an assignment. Having this plan will help me to be successful in the graduate program. Why might the disposition of engagement be important for professionals in the field of counseling to embody? Please discuss at least three ways. Engagement is an essential part of counseling. If engagement is not a priority then there is no way to be an effective counselor. Being an active listener will help me as a counselor to understand what it is being communicated. It will also let the client to know I am listening and trying to connect to them. Being empathic is a second part of being engaging. Listen to the person and empathizing with them and validating feelings helps to create a safe space. Being compassionate assists me with creating a safe space and shows them that I care about their well being. Being self aware would help me as a counselor me to not impose my beliefs onto the client. This will help me to think objectively when providing the tools in a therapeutic space. ReplyReply to Comment o Collapse Subdiscussion Dr. Marian Sebe Dr. Marian Sebe Feb 28, 2024Feb 28 at 5:48pm
Thank you, Carletta, for sharing your reflections with procrastination and the disposition of engagement. As you have included: "Prolonging the work does not allow me time to read and research my subject." Furthermore, I would encourage you to consider how this "prolonging" can also impact the disposition of "engagement" both with our professional peers as well as with our clients?-Thoughts? Procrastinating has benefited me because it allowed me to take a breather and not put too much on my plate at once. When I got out of undergraduate school, I wanted to rush into grad school and get my master's. The only thing that mattered to me was the big picture. However, being a single mom, working a full-time job where my schedule is chaotic, and still trying to find time management to spend family time was hard to juggle. I attempted grad school a total of three times. The first within the week, I realized it was too much of a commitment for me. The second time, unfortunately, my grandmother had passed, and again, it still was not the time. During this go-around, I aligned my schedule with specific periods in which I could focus on my studies. I also tried different paths; I first went for social work, then I went for clinical mental health through a Christian college. So this goes around, I am focusing on the end goal but taking it class by class. I will get this master's. Everyone's journey is different. How might my ability to procrastinate impact my ability to show up and contribute I am a last-minute person; I will not deny that. I got through undergraduate school by turning everything in either the Sunday before it was due or the day it was due. However, I always turned it on time. I think the struggle with Grad school is that I work full-time providing in-home therapy to clients. Sometimes this can impact my

availability for group projects, or group meetings. So, the only setback is finding a good date and time for myself and my colleagues since I am in southern Louisiana and have a different time zone. How might the disposition of engagement be important in the field of counseling to embody I want to start by saying ethics and engagement are the cornerstone to counseling. Without engagement and alignment, you have nothing. You must first build that rapport with clients so that they can feel comfortable discussing things that may bring up unwanted or painful memories. Without engagement, you are likely to have a client that is just a body in a room instead of one who will participate and put in the work to reach their goals. Building engagement with the client can also help the counselor to assess the patterns that have shown and continue to cycle. This is the key pointer to identifying if a client will reach their goal in psychotherapy treatment. You want to provide a safe enviroment where your clients can bring up typically things they may not want to discuss with anyone else. BA, M. R. C. (2019, October 22).
