2 THE BEGINNING OF CHILD’S LIFE The Beginning of a Child's Life Do you think is easy find a daycare for your childen? Image a young couple who came to Toronto new, and they are looking for a daycare center for their 24-month old twins so that both parents will start to their new full-timework. Their first task before start to work is finding a daycare to leave their child. They will go to the closest daycare center to their homes and register their children. Everything looks so easy up here, isn't it? Unfortunately, it is not so easy to register your little one in a center. The first problem they encounter is that the waiting lists. In Toronto today, families take their place on the waiting lists before their children are born. For a parent, one of the most difficult decisions in their lives is to decide which daycare center to send their children. The education of a child is important and starts from an early age. The most fundamental education level in which the future of children is shaped is early childhood. Families should make the best decisions by making some comparisons such as distance from home, fee schedules, and academic quality between daycare centers in order to decide which center their children will attend. One of the most important criteria for a family to choose the most suitable daycare center for their children is that they have to consider the distance between the center and home. The Leaside Daycare center is the closest distance to this parent's home. They can be reached with TTC in four minutes as they will be able to drive in three minutes. Moreover, this is a 12-minute walk from their home to the center. Another school that is
3 THE BEGINNING OF CHILD’S LIFE compared is the Montessori School. Its distance from the family's home while sixteen minutes with the car, 37 minutes with TTC. When we compare the school with Leaside Daycare Center, it is too far from their home. Despite this, the school is close to their workplace. It will not be a problem that this school to be away from their homes because every day they will go in the same direction. In short, being away from the daycare center to their home cannot affect them negatively. So, when we compare both centers, there are no big differences as a distance advantage. Families need to find a center compatible with their budget when choosing a daycare for their children, so they should also compare the fee schedule of the centers they find. The monthly fee of the Leaside Day Care Center is $ 1,700. The parents have twins so they will pay $ 3,400 a month. Their maximum budget is $ 3,000. But, according to Leaside Daycare Center website, the subsidy is available for their school. If we think the family is a low income, they can get the subsidy. On the same website, there is no extra payment for the school, which means the children's daily meals are included in the price. The Montessori School, the other school that we have compared, is $ 1,339 a month. The parents will have to pay $ 2,678 a month for the twins. This price is appropriate for their budget. Also, according to its web site, the school has a special discount for siblings. To sum up, when we compare the two schools with the economic aspects, Montessori School is more expensive for this family because it is not suitable for the subsidy and they have to pay all the wages themselves.

4 THE BEGINNING OF CHILD’S LIFE It would be a great mistake to think of nursery centers only as places where children are being cared for because it is an important stage in early childhood education. Therefore, families should compare the academic quality of centers in the selection of daycare. According to Leaside Daycare Center website, they provide a warm, loving, and caring environment to encourage play-based learning and experiences. Staff and parents co-operate to support the children's sense of well-being, belonging. The center use “Emergent Curriculum” which follows the ELECT (Early Learning for Every Child Today) Principles. Emergent Curriculum is a non-traditional and child-based style. Nevertheless, according to Montessori School website, they follow the Montessori learning theory. This teaching method offered a prepared environment, equipped with scientific, purposeful activities and materials to nourish the children's developmental needs. Both schools were established in the 1970s, so they have high experience. The Leaside Daycare center has registered early childhood educators, while Montessori educators also have a Montessori teaching certificate. In short, a good education center is composed of experienced and well-educated educators. As a result, both centers have positive and negative aspects for the family. Montessori school is far away from the family home, but close to their work. However, the biggest disadvantage of this school is that it will force the family economically. In addition, the education method applied in the school is completely different from that in public schools in Toronto. Therefore, the family must have created future plans. Because
5 THE BEGINNING OF CHILD’S LIFE when their children start this school, they will need to continue with the same school for the next grades. On the other hand, the Leaside Daycare center follows the educational philosophy applied in public schools in Toronto. It does not economically compel the family because it is suitable for the subsidy. Education is the most advantageous investment for your child's future!
