Week 1 Journal Week 1 Journal After completing this week’s reading, I would define critical thinking as weighing all outcomes and factors when it comes to decision making. Whether that be something as simple as
picking your next meal or juggling between career choices that will last a lifetime. Critical thinking in a sense is predicting that possible outcomes that happen after the decision is made. Critical thinking however is different than just overthinking decisions. Critical thinking can change the trajectory of your life and the path you are meant to go down. Reflecting and

weighing out risks and challenges that you might come across to eliminate any chances of possible uncertainties which could potentially be fatal as mentioned in the in-text example. Critical thinking separates the typical average person from a person who is capable of problem solving and working through tough to handle situations. I believe the author introduces chapters 12, 13, and 14 as “heart of the matter” to explaining the importance of the multiple skills that go into the process of critical thinking. These skills include interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, explanation, and self-
regulation. Some individuals are born with certain attributes like mentioned above but the way a person uses these skills will determine the effectiveness to be able to think critically and make logical arguments. Facione emphasizes the importance of inference and explanation in the critical thinking process which I define as the ability to make an educated predication and evaluate and explain the steps taken to reach that certain conclusion. Facione finds importance to
these concepts because as stated in the text, “They explore benefits, uses, strengths, and weaknesses of the three most powerful forms of argument making.” (Facione, 2015, pg. 35).
My biggest challenge going into this new session is being online and finding the motivation to focus on my studies and schoolwork. I’ve been enrolled in summer courses for the past 3 summers in a row and have yet to find a good system to sticking to a set schedule to be productive. Online courses in the past especially during quarantine were a challenge just in focusing and participating to my fullest potential. With the course I have tried my best to stay organized with my planner by staying on top of assignments on a weekly basis. With this course I think I struggle with the writing aspect the most as I haven’t taken an English course in a while.
Since this course is heavy in writing and analyzing reading material, I have pushed myself to stay focused and complete the assigned reading chapters. I do enjoy the readings so far in this

course as they really make you think about some of the simpler things in life that I never had a second thought about. Regarding the last few chapters, I can be successful in this class this session by not only staying on top of assignments but really think about the material we’re reading and what it means to think critically. I can look at problems from a positive point of view
and ask myself “Am I making a positive impact on myself and the community around me?” Doing this ensures I am making choices that will not only positively impact me but the others around me as well.
