Reflection 4 Connor Strand
Core session five started out just like our last few sessions. My cousin and I played video games for a little bit before our session and caught up with each other about how our week went. He has been busy with baseball coming up and it has been a big aspect of his life. After we caught up with one another we jumped into the session because it was getting late. We started by
going over his homework and he said that he was able to complete his homework and his acts of kindness were very fun and fulfilling for him. We talked about how the acts of kindness made him feel and how they made the people he was kind too feel. We both agreed that implementing kindness into our daily lives is something that can be done more often. The benefits are felt from all sides and it makes everyone feel good. After we went over his homework we bagn the discussion about character strengths and virtues. After we had discussed what he thought were his strengths and what it meant I had him take a look at the VIA classification of strengths. We talked about it for a while as to what some of the strengths meant. He compared what he thought his strengths would be to what the options were at the VIA classifications. Following this we spoke about what these characters strengths mean in day to day life and how they can relate to happiness and well being. We wrapped up by talking about what would be happening next week and his homework for the week. In core session six we did not get the chance to play video games before our session but we still caught up with each other about our week. As we jumped into the session we went over the homework which he was again able to complete and felt great for doing his acts of kindness. Next I had him take the VIA, once he completed the survey we were able to see what his top
strengths were and we talked about how they compared to what he thought they would be and what they actually were. We also went over again what some of the character strengths meant. We talked for a while about what his strengths were and how they are a part of his life. Following this we talked about his assignments that were upcoming for the week with his character strengths and he chose to continue doing acts of kindness for his second assignment. I made sure he understood his assignments for the week and finished the session Engaging in service work focused on discussing topics like happiness, kindness, gratitude, and overall well-being with my cousin PJ has been somewhat challenging and deeply rewarding. My reflection on the most difficult and satisfying aspects of this service work can be simply explained by melting the ice between us at the beginning to get to a deeper level of communication and progress with the program.
Some of the difficult aspects of this program has been our maintaining consistency in the genuinity of our conversations about well-being. I know it is crucial for meaningful progress, but
it can be challenging to sustain each week. Both of our lives demands and distractions have caused some interruptions in our deeper discussions, making it difficult to build momentum and see continued results. Another aspect that has been difficult for me and PJ over this process has been navigating through our differing perspectives on certain topics. What constitutes happiness or kindness has varied greatly from our perspectives and although this is not a bad thing it has caused some difficulty in understanding the thoughts of one another. Finding common ground while respecting individual viewpoints requires patience and empathy and me and PJ can both lack patience with each other at times especially when there is so much going on in our lives. Moving on to the areas of this process that have been satisfying. Me and Pj have both seen a tremendous amount of satisfaction from several of the sessions. Pj has loved the acts of
kindness, gratitude journaling and the character traits exercise. I have seen him appreciate what the sessions mean and how they can have an impact on the world around him when he becomes conscious of these different aspects. Witnessing PJ's growth and development as we have explored these topics has been incredibly satisfying. Seeing him adopt new perspectives, find joy
in gratitude, or practice kindness in his daily life has reinforced the value of the service work and
strengthened our bond as cousins. Engaging in these conversations has allowed me to have a deeper understanding of PJ's thoughts, feelings, and values. As we both share insights and reflections, we have gained a clearer picture of each other's inner worlds, fostering a growing connection. The service work focused on well-being isn't just about giving; it's also about receiving support. Through our conversations, I have found myself gaining valuable insights and
support from PJ as well, creating a reciprocal exchange that enriches both of our lives. Knowing that our discussions contribute to PJ's overall well-being and happiness has been immensely gratifying. Even small shifts in mindset or behavior can ripple outwards, positively impacting not
only PJ but also those around him, creating a ripple effect of positivity in his family and community.
In conclusion, while my service work has focused on discussing well-being topics with my cousin PJ it has come with some challenges. However, the rewards of deepening connections, supporting personal growth, and contributing to positive change have made it a profoundly satisfying process. Through empathy, patience, and mutual support, we have navigated the difficulties and appreciated the aspects of this meaningful journey together.
