Three challenges that families face that affect their children's academic success are sibling issues, constant care and supervision of a child with a disability, and strain on family relationships due to hardships and difficulties.
Sibling issues
Being the youngest sibling of six children in the family, I understand the dynamics of how siblings interact with one another and how issues can arise between siblings. There is the competitive nature of sibling rivalry, the sometimes unwanted responsibilities given to the older siblings, and the feeling of being overlooked and ignored when dealing with a sibling who has a disability.
A possible solution to sibling issues is for parents to address how each of their children feels and teach them how to communicate and love one another as a family. “There are many benefits of positive sibling relationships, including support, friendship, and connection. Research shows that sibling relationships can increase sympathy, which can foster other prosocial behaviors like helping and sharing” (Hurley, How to foster positive sibling relationships
2018). Strategies that can be used to foster positive relationships between siblings are for parents and caregivers to create and provide special time with each sibling. This strategy allows parents to develop a one-on-one relationship with their child and also offers equal time to each child. Another strategy parents can use is to introduce activities that include all members of the family. This strategy is engaging and can strengthen the family as a unit, The
last strategy is to give each sibling a role or job in the household that they are responsible for to let them know they are trusted and are a part of the family dynamic.
There are many resources available online to assist parents in ways to resolve sibling issues, especially in those cases that deal with children with disabilities. Through technology, there are community support groups and websites that provide helpful tips on how to communicate and ways to de-
escalate conflict between siblings. Some examples include The Sibling Leadership Network (SLN) and The Child Mind Institute Family Resource Center.
Constant care and supervision of a child with a disability
When providing constant care and supervision for children with disabilities, some parents and caregivers find it difficult and can also be overwhelmed with the pressures of worrying about their child's long-term care after they are gone. Another challenge that parents and caregivers may have with the care of their children with disabilities is learning about the particular
disability and the available treatment options. Medical concerns such as appointments, therapy, and accommodations, can become very stressful to parents while they are learning to care for their child with disabilities. School and classroom placement add to the emotional and physical demands of caring for children with disabilities.
A great solution for constant care and supervision of a child with a disability is providing respite care. "Respite programs provide planned short-term and time-limited breaks for families and other unpaid caregivers of children and adults with disabilities or cognitive loss to support and maintain the primary caregiving relationship. Respite also provides a positive experience for the person receiving care" (Wikipedia, Respite care 2023). Other potential solutions for providing continual care and supervision of a child with a disability include joining support groups for emotional and social support, going to counseling, special Educational Services provided by the child's school, and government assistance programs provided by the federal government.
One strategy parents and caregivers can use is to practice self-care and make sure they are taking care of their health and wellness so they can be prepared to care for their child with a disability. Parents can also speak to a therapist, a special education teacher, a medical doctor, or any other type of professional who can offer any type of assistance that will aid them in caring for their child. Resources that could help parents include The National Research Center for Parents with Disabilities and HelpGuide.org. When it comes to the use of technology, parents and caregivers can use assistive technology, resources from different websites, and digital applications that can provide assistance and accommodations in caring for their child or children with disabilities.
Strain on family relationships due to hardships and difficulties
Describe each challenge.
Provide potential solutions to each challenge.
Provide strategies to put potential solutions in place.
Identify resources that could help parents facing each challenge.
Discuss how technology could also be a resource for families that face the challenges.
Indicate that your desire is to provide support, not to assume that you know exactly what the families are going through. Consider including a relatable personal experience that, when mentioned briefly, could bridge the gap between you and the families.
Write a 250-500 word communication plan, for a grade level of your choice, to ensure collaboration with families and caregivers. Your communication plan should include how you will communicate with families throughout the school year and identify various communication methods to meet the challenges some families may face. Explain how your plan will incorporate technology.
