Interview Coding Activity
RESEARCH QUESTION
: To what extent are home and community influences integrated into elementary school classrooms? In what ways do schools and teachers build bridges between school and community/homes?
Based on the research question/s above, consider the interview excerpt below; use the answers to the interview questions (in the interview excerpt) to determine themes that will help ‘answer’ the research question/s.
First step
: identify key words/categories from the research question/s that can establish themes.
For example:
o
Home influences
o
Community influences
o
Building bridges
Second step
: create a ‘tree’ of concepts that will ‘develop under’ each of the above key words/categories. For example: o
Home influences could include language, income level (low-income), literacy issues, literacy/reading/writing, interests, etc.
o
Community influences could include culture, school structure, resources, relationships, o
Building bridges could include activities the teacher does to support students in and out of the classroom.
Third step:
Identify concepts and words (
in the interview answers
) that will align with the key words/concepts/definitions from the research questions.
Also note:
the key concepts/categories AND the ‘concept trees’ can adjust and change as you read through interviews. In addition, since you will be conducting the interview/s, you will have a sense of what interviewees have said, and this can help develop the key words/concepts as well as the ‘concept trees’.
Interview Excerpt (Note: the following interview excerpt was conducted with a second-grade public school teacher in the central region of California)
1.
How do you connect your curriculum with students’ home resources? What aspects do
you take into consideration for the student's success?
I consider all of my families as low-income families. When planning curriculum, I plan on having supplies available for all students. I make photocopies of the books that I am going to use, and I try to use reading materials that incorporate students' living styles like housing, extended family and family socioeconomic disadvantages.
Note: “I consider all of my families as low-income families.” Both community and home influence
2.
What challenges do students face in school? In this community most of its population is Spanish speakers. I saw a need for becoming a bilingual teacher to be able to communicate with my families. In the classroom I think schools
need to provide students with more computers. Students do not have enough experience working on a computer from home. I also think that classes have a high number of students which can put students at a disadvantage. I would like to have a smaller student ratio so I can provide quality attention to each student. Especially right now because I was assigned to
a second-grade class and my students cannot read. Children will benefit if classes were smaller, so I could provide one-on-one instruction as part of my
curriculum.
Note: “In this community most of its population is Spanish speakers
.
” Both community and home influence
3.
How do you motivate your students to do their schoolwork and how do you integrate students' schoolwork with their individual interest, knowledge and understanding? I use children’s interest to grab their attention. Most of my students this year like skateboarding and Pokemon. These two aspects help me to develop and create interesting
curriculum for the kids. I focus on promoting non-monetary motivation that will impact children's social emotional areas and help them to build community in my classroom. Some of the things I do are: allow a student to remove her/his shoes for a whole day, lunch with a
teacher, changing the children’s reading monsters on their reading profile, and allowing them to sit on my [teacher] chair when they are in a classroom.
