What is UDL?
Universal Design for Learning also known as UDL is “a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn”(CAST, 2024).
●
Each and every student learns differently and at their own pace. Students will also have their own individual learning styles. By implementing UDL, students are able to learn in their own unique way and have their learning needs met.
How does UDL address the needs of all students?
●
Appropriate Goals (Defined): “By facilitating the design and implementation of a flexible, responsive curriculum, UDL offers options for how information is presented, how students respond or demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and how students are engaged in learning” (Ralabate, 2011).
●
Curriculum Barriers (Evaluation): Students will come with different diverse needs in means to required support or instructional tools that will assist them in comprehending information learned/participating in the learning process.

UDL: Instructional Approaches
1.
Classroom Environment (Modifications)
a.
Teachers must
ensure that they are providing students with enough space to accommodate the class size. This includes: seating, tables and/or desks, options to set close/far from the board, quiet corners, safety (comfort) spots.
2. Optional Assignments
a.
UDL provides all
students with a variety of options in each of them are able to effectively demonstrate their prior and/or newly learned knowledge in order to successfully write essays, complete worksheets, or create content videos.
3. Feedback
a.
“With UDL, students get feedback — often every day — on how they’re doing” (CAST, 2018). Providing feedback allows
students to have the opportunity to reflect on their learning within the classroom. Such reflections can include both academics or behaviors. (Ex. A student was unable to meet their goal due to playing with their peer. The student takes accountability for their actions and understands what they are able to do next time in order to meet their next goal)

UDL: Strategies Improving Professional Practice & Outcomes

All
classroom successes require you, as the teacher, to be able to identify effective strategies that promote learning in the learning environment.
★
The academic success of student(s) can easily be promoted when there is an understanding of both the UDL and student(s) needs.
★
Utilizing strategies is an effective way to enhance a students success when providing them with both growth and development in which they need to be successful in the classroom.
★
Teachers can have a better achievement outcome in the classroom by providing opportunities for students to practice. Teachers should offer homework (optional). This can include a small group setting for struggling learners where they will they receive direct instructions from the teacher.
★
Change up the classroom! Ensure that the classroom is welcoming and friendly; Positive and nourishing.
