Determine how
individuals and groups are represented
in the advertisements.
A.
What audiences are the advertisements trying to reach?
B.
What unspoken or underlying messages do you think the ads might be sending?
Olay #Makespaceforwomen – In this ad, a woman is sitting and talking with a screen behind her showing three women in astronaut suits walking. The woman then secure themselves in the seats on board the space ship with slight nervousness on their faces. An Olay branded spaceship is then seen launching. A lady is then seen responding to a caller in which the three women in space are seen again. One of the women then says, “there is enough space in space for women.” A room full of women ground controllers jump in excitement as they watch the three women in space. The audience of this ad is women, and the underlying meaning of the ad is to bring attention to the under-valued women working in STEM based fields. It focuses on gender equality and female empowerment. Many women are often overlooked in these fields shadowed by their male counterparts. The focus is to spread the awareness of this inequality and to show women they matter in these fields and there is enough “space” opportunity for women. Haagen-Dazs: Beard Bibs- In this text and picture-based ad, there are 6 pictured examples of the beard bibs as well as picture of different men wearing these bibs on their faces. The bibs display a colorful design that depicts a different culture on each. The cultures depicted are; Cavemen, Confucius, Pharaoh, Assyrian, Viking and Sadhu. The target audience of this ad is bearded men. The underlying message of this ad is that it is okay for men to feel vulnerable and for them to express themselves. Men can have insecurities with solid and liquid particles being trapped in their beards. Also, the graphic aspect of the bibs displays masculine depictions that reflect the person’s culture. The ad helps men get out of their comfort zones and express themselves in a way that may seem amusing to others.
Panasonic: Your Inner Man – This ad shows three pictures of muscular men without shirts, showing chest hair shaved into shapes. The first man is shown with blue jeans and a belt, shirtless with a ballerina shaped patch of chest hair. The second photo is of a man in a pair of lounge pants with no shirt and chest hair shaved into the shape of a bra. The third man is wearing
blue jeans with his hands in his pocket and a guitar shaped patch of chest hair. The target audience would be men with an underlying message of a man should not care what others think about them and their expression of themselves. In society men are seen as somewhat closed off and not very expressive of their feeling and dreams. This ad encourages men to express themselves and to not worry about what others may feel about what interests them. In public a man with a ballerina or any shape shaved into their chest may be considered weird or laughable but, who cares what other may feel about it! Men are allowed to express their emotions and interests in any way that makes them happy. Pantene: See Beauty, Not Gender- At the beginning a person is seen pulling up to a building on
a motor scooter and parks on the side of the road and removes their helmet. The person with long
hair looks past the camera. Next, we see a woman working as a hair stylist and then a woman walking down the catwalk of a fashion show. The person walking down the catwalk trips and is seen on the ground. The camera is then shown on a woman sitting behind a desk in an office addressing the camera. The woman asks, “did you only see gender?”. The person on the motor scooter is seen talking on a phone and searching somewhat frantically for something. Another woman approaches and accepts a delivery from the person on the motor scooter. The woman behind the desk speaks towards the camera again. The hairstylist is then seen talking to a new customer that walks into the shop and is then seen washing the customer’s hair. The woman that fell while walking the catwalk gets up and turns towards the camera with a determined look. The camera presents all 4 people shown in the ad in shorts bursts. The target audience of the ad is everyone. The underlying message of the ad is to not focus on gender as the defining feature of a person. As humans we are all beautiful in our own unique way and being transgender does not change this. The ad wants people to see that transgender people are normal people that have careers and aspirations and the life choice of being transgender does not change the fact that they
are people. 2.
Identify stereotyped group behavior in the advertisements.
A.
What are the advertisements saying about the behavior of the groups represented in them?
B.
What underlying messages do the advertisements send about the group behaviors in them and the audiences they assume will be consuming the products?
Olay #Makespaceforwomen –
In this ad, the three women in space suits discover for themselves that there is indeed “enough space for women.” This tells woman that they can do anything they want, even if it goes against the societal norms and stereotypes. Women are viewed as striving to motivated other women that they are the audience of this ad and the consumers of this product.
Haagen-Dazs: Beard Bibs- The ad depicts men as self-conscious and people with emotions and concerns. Men with beards are often seen as strong manly men who rarely express emotion. These men are normal people with concerns about their image, especially when it comes to the embarrassing aspect of having food in their facial hair. The ad shows men that they can solve their self-conscious concerns and fears while still expressing themselves in a manner most will find “manly.”
Panasonic: Your Inner Man –
In this ad, men are outwardly expressing their interests in a unique way that capture the attention of other people. The idea of men keeping their interests and
feeling to themselves is overlooked in society and should be something men wear on their sleeves. This idea of interests is what makes us human and expressing these interests is a good way to build self-confidence and meet new people. This ad displays a necessary purpose for the product with a message to do things with confidence.

Pantene: See Beauty, Not Gender- The stereotype presented here is that people only see gender
when interacting with others, especially those of the transgender community. The public is the audience and the consumer of this product. The message is to not judge a person on their life choices or gender but to see the beauty in everyone. 3.
Determine how different cultures are represented in the advertisements.
A.
How do the ads represent culture? Are any stereotypes being used?
B.
What unspoken or underlying messages do you think the ads might be sending about culture?
Olay #Makespaceforwomen –
This ad is primarily focus on women. It represents the women overlooked in the STEM field such as astronauts and scientists. The world has improved but, in the past, this world was seen as a “mans” world. Women can do anything men can do including working in these fields. In this ad, women are being motivated to pursue these jobs if they find interest regardless of the cultural norms. Haagen-Dazs: Beard Bibs- This ad is focus on men with beards. In society men with beards are considered manly with little to no embarrassment or self-image fears. Most people may be embarrassed by having food left on their clothes or face, and men are no different. The ad shows men that it is okay to have these concerns and to express themselves in an outward way. Panasonic: Your Inner Man –
The focus of this as is men. Men are usually seen as emotionless and not very outwardly expressive. Society has different views of men expressing their interests and even more so in unique ways. The ad wants men to express their interests and to break the social norm by doing it regardless of the way some may feel about it. Pantene: See Beauty, Not Gender- This ad is focused on the transgender community. Some members of society see gender first when interacting with people and this can negatively affect the way they feel about them. The ad urges people to think twice about judging people based upon their gender and instead to see the beauty. 4.
Discuss how ethical issues in the social sciences impact advertising. Look beyond the economic effects of advertisements and consider the following questions to help address this prompt:
A.
Do the ads confirm biases? Do they rely on stereotypes? Do they support social change? Do they stay neutral on social or political movements? Should they get involved in social or political movements?
B.
Why might it be important for advertisers and companies in a diverse world to be as inclusive and unbiased as possible?
Olay #Makespaceforwomen –
This ad was biased towards woman and the equal opportunity amongst women in STEM based fields. The ad uses the focus of women in the roles necessary to complete a space launch to ensure clarity towards the message. The biases used in this ad will
bring attention to the group being advocated for and will encourage other women to break social norms and be who they want to be. This is a great step towards the social movement of equal recognition for women in STEM fields and is directly related to the movement of equal rights for
women. Haagen-Dazs: Beard Bibs- The bias present in this ad would be towards men. This ad supports social change by allowing men to express themselves and overcome self-image difficulties. This ad is fairly neutral as far as social or political movements, but the ad does advocate for men and the issues that are present with an excess of facial hair. This ad also promotes cultural maturity and expression with the designs allowing men to be in tune with their cultural beliefs.
Panasonic: Your Inner Man –
The ad is biased towards men. The stereotype of men being closed off and unexpressive of their emotions and interest are being challenged in this ad. The “unconventional” method of men expressing themselves with shaved body hair goes against social norms and encourages men to be who they are and embrace their interest. The shapes shaved on some of the men in the ad could be considered “feminine” and will not likely be expressed outward. Pantene: See Beauty, Not Gender- The bias is focused on the transgender community. The stereotype being presented is that people see gender before all else. This ad makes a strong social
and political message towards a different way to think. I believe this ad is vital to the social movement of transgender equality. The ad focuses on the issue of people seeing gender when talking to someone in the transgender community. This narrow view on gender specifically is the
root of the issue with it being the judging factor. I believe it is important for advertisers to be as inclusive as possible when it comes to a message that can make real change to the world. An ad focused on a bias would target only a small group of the populous. This can help reach more people into wanting to make a change in their communities or country. If the ad is targeting a specific demographic, it may be more beneficial to be biased towards a certain goal. 5.
Propose a
finalized social science research question
based on your analysis of the advertisements you chose.
A.
Think beyond the minor details from your analysis and consider what the ads say about individuals, groups, institutions, or society.
B.
What is the meaning or significance of the ads? For example, you might be interested in ethical issues related to advertising. You might want to explore how current events influence the content of ads. Or maybe you would like to ask how common themes in ads could impact an audience’s self-concept.
The social science related question I finalized was, why are some people bothered by transgendered individuals’ life choices? I believe that the group of people to be most impacted by this question would be those that discriminate upon the transgender community. They will be forced to evaluate a reason for why they have an issue with the life choices made by transgender
individuals. This may sway some people from this notion. I believe the transgender community would be most interested in the question as it brings awareness to the subject of hate based upon gender. However, the question could be viewed as a way of challenging or invalidating their choices and identities. In the ad “Pantene: See Beauty Not Gender,” the person that is discussing the ad asks the question “did you see gender?” This is important because when watching the ad, the person was completing a task as a human. The issue is present when the viewer labels the person as transgender by focusing on gender. 6.
Discuss how you used a social science perspective to develop your research question.
A.
Explain how you used social science concepts, perspectives, or approaches to write your research question.
The social science perspective I used to write my question was the sociological perspective. This perspective takes every aspect of human behavior into account, and how or why things happen. This perspective allows me to analyze all the aspects of the ad and narrow down the main issue. The question of why people have an issue with the transgender community and how did that community upset the people who dislike them. 7.
Explain one major development in the social sciences that may have influenced your
research question.
A.
The major development could include an important event, a discovery, the rejection of an old theory, acceptance of a new theory, or a change in culture that affected the field.
B.
How might these changes in thinking and research have affected the conclusions drawn about your advertisements and the questions asked about them?
The major development in social sciences that influenced my question the most would be, “the end of the myth that same sex couples are bad parents.” This influenced my question by essentially proving the power of my question. There is no reason that a myth of that nature should be created as there is no proof of same sex couples being bad parents. My question could pertain to this matter with the myth most likely being started because people disagree with their life choices. The life choice of becoming a different gender does not affect another person’s life.
This development can change the way people view ads like the Pantene ad by changing their perspective on how they view people. The myth being started was based on the misconception of
homosexual people. The same goes for transgender people, people who disagree with the life choices of these people may feel this way based upon a misconception. With this in mind, you can overlook the gender you feel they should be and instead see the beauty in the human being in
front of you.

8.
Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and/or values influenced the way you analyzed your advertisements.
A.
Consider how your perceptions of the social world may have influenced the way you viewed your advertisements. Did it/they cause you to make assumptions about the people in the ads? Did you focus on certain advertisements, or parts of advertisements as a result? How might someone with a different set of beliefs view your advertisements?
My beliefs and values affect the way I analyze ads and the way I look for the messages being portrayed to the audience. The ads I chose to analyze involve breaking gender norms and the freedom to make life choices like changing gender and the person you want to marry. This belief gives me an open mind to see more than what is in front of me. People should not be restricted by society when it comes to expressing themselves or being who they feel they are supposed to be. These things do not affect my life in any way and this is how I feel most people should view things in society. When analyzing my ads, my beliefs did not affect my assumptions of the people in the ad. I did not focus on stereotypes or what may be considered the societal norm. I did however find it easier to discuss the ads about men and messages in those ads. This is due to being able to relate more to the ad and being the target audience. I believe people with a different mindset may focus
on different aspects they feel strongly about. The ads did not relate to my life directly but I feel as though people with a more direct impact would view the ads in a different mindset. 9.
Discuss how social science perspectives or approaches could be used to process information.
A.
Focus on the social science perspectives or approaches you feel would be the most beneficial for analyzing the information you are presented with every day.
B.
For example, would analyzing ads on social media from the political science perspective help you better understand a company’s political stance on issues? What perspective would help you determine if there was a possible link between the length of a commercial and its intended audience? Would examining an ad targeted at caregivers from a sociological perspective help you understand the meaning of family in various cultures?
The perspectives of social sciences can be used to process information by breaking the matter
down and adding different insights on the matter. When analyzing a case, the use of multiple perspectives can give different results. I chose the economic perspective to analyze. This perspective considers market forces and the effect of money on a subject/case. This perspective deepens my understanding of the topic by determining the root of the ad. For example, I can evaluate whether the ad is created for the sole intention of making money or if
the ad was created with the message in mind. This perspective helps me to analyze the subject without the need for details of the ad. An example of this perspective is the way it can
be applied to sponsored posts on social media. This perspective would help to understand the
incentive of the sponsors and how the post affects the behavior of consumers. This can be explained further with how you can analyze how sponsored posts generate revenue for the sponsors and the platform that the post is on. You can also evaluate how the posts have affected supply and demand. 10. Explain how looking at the world from social science perspectives may impact your personal life.
A.
How might using social science skills help you process and understand the information you use in your life?
Looking at the world from a social science perspective could impact your personal life by altering the way you interpret things you see and learn new ways to make actual change in your community. Most people see the changes needed in the community but don’t have the tools necessary to make these changes. Understanding why people do something or how something keeps happening can show you how to solve that issue. For example, you may notice crime in the area you live in. Noticing the crime and the type of crime is only half the battle but, if you know that the crime is being committed by people who have drug problems then you can start at the source of the issue. Social sciences is a tool to better help the community understand the things going on in their area and has helped many social scientists make real change in the world.
11. Explain how examining issues from social science perspectives may affect your community relationships.
A.
Think about challenges or opportunities in your community. How might applying social science perspectives to those issues benefit your community
?
The relationship you have with your community can be affected by looking at issues from a social science perspective in many ways. This can help you get more involved with your community and give you a better understanding of the people in your community. A person who has little to no relationship with their community may not know what they can do to improve it. Looking at these issues may bring ideas of real change which would give you more confidence in
interacting with your community. An example that has personal meaning to me is the challenge my community is facing with vehicle theft. More people having a better understanding of social sciences and the perspectives of it would help the community organize a real change for this city.
Most of our crime comes from the southern area of the state on the mainland. The local government has allowed free transport from Seattle to Oak Harbor causing an increase in crime in the area. Also, my community has an issue with addictive drugs much like other places
causing income issues and theft being a way for them to earn enough money. My community could make real change in this issue by working together to stop the drug problem in the area and
by petitioning to stop free transport. 12. Discuss how being more informed about the social sciences may help you understand global contemporary issues.
A.
Consider how understanding the ways social scientists examine human behaviors could influence the way you approach global challenges and questions.
Being informed about social sciences could help with global contemporary issues by helping people understand the reasons why we need change in the world as well as understand what world leaders are doing to try and make change. I stand by the fact that the easiest way to tackle an issue is to find the reason why an issue is present in the first place. For example, looking through a social science lens could narrow down the economic issues causing a rise in homelessness in large cities. Or you can analyze the root cause of the war in eastern Europe. These world issues are not things you could tackle as a single person however, it is something the world can solve together with a little more social science.
