Prompt:
Frequently, literacy is understood as how people interpret, produce, and use language to achieve certain kinds of goals within a specific community (e.g., the ways you write, read, and speak within your school, working, and community lives). In addition, literacy can be understood as a means to critique and investigate how attitudes toward language shape social and power inequalities. This function of literacy is often called critical literacy. In your Critical Literacy Narrative, you will narrate and analyze the roles that reading, writing, and community have played in your life. Your goal in this assignment is to narrate the pivotal moments of your literacy development, especially within your communities, analyzing those moments (your thesis) in terms of larger cultural conversations on language, literacy, and schooling. Your work on this narration should help you develop a sense of critical language awareness—the ability to reflect on language expectations and make informed choices within a given rhetorical situation.
Process: As you are brainstorming, explore the language practices of the communities you have long been a part of. Next, focus on two or three pivotal events in your literacy development. Finally, consider the ways your literacy practices might become valued or devalued in contexts of formal education. For your proposal, you will need to explain the following:
1. your chosen feature of your literacy development and reason (exigence) for
narrating this subject; and
2. the way your narrative speaks to larger cultural conversations on language, literacy, and schooling.
