1. Why would a potential or current employer want or need to scrutinize an employee's personal social media accounts? Looking at the personal lives of a potential employee on social media or posts of a current employee can give you a deeper look into their character or their motivational levels of the company mission through the workplace. Another reason, as sad as it is, is to check the credibility of that employee. I’ve had many employees call in sick, but have seen through social media that they are out of town or getting their nails down, etc. 2. More importantly, should the employer have looked at the employee’s social media postings to begin with? I absolutely agree with looking at a potential or current employees’ social medias postings and accounts. These employees are an extension of the business that you run, and they represent your organization. If they are not representing themselves in a way that customers or potential investors would like to see, it could cause a bad reputation and loss of profits for your business. 3. What consequences should the potential or current employee face for unseemly or concerning personal posts? The consequence of a potential employee’s concerning personal post is to not receive the job that they are applying for. If a current employee made a concerning post, the consequences would have to coincide with the level of unprofessionalism that was displayed
in the posting. As a manager, I would pull them into the office to make them aware of the concerning post and how it does not meet the standards of professionalism that we have set in the employee guidelines. If the post is not too concerning, just a warning is necessary, but another violation would have to mean a write up (again depending on the offense.) 4. As a prospective employer, how would you handle social media concerns in your workplace? The most important thing to keep in mind is watching the credibility and professionalism in your post. The power of social media is strong in today’s society, and everyone can see your every move if you make it available to them through social media accounts or posts. Be mindful of what you post and the tone that is used because you don’t know who will come across your account and what you put out on the internet can stay there forever.
