https://youtu.be/MX-BHsNa4vQ
2. Describe in several paragraphs:
a) How the group is identifying themselves as a collection of individuals - Carolyn Rye chairwomen of the school board city of Virginia Beach Vice Chairmen Melnick Members: Miss Anderson Miss Felton Miss Holtz Miss Manning Miss Owens Miss Riggs Miss Weems, and Miss Franklin absent due to perusal reason.
b) Clearly identify the common purpose - Honor school Board recognition recipients Mariah Kennedy first place win at Virginia leadership conference. Congratulate Aaron Nye regional Liberian of the year and now contender for state Liberian of the year. The agenda was about additional grant funding, monthly superintendent report, regular school board meeting, online comments, student code of conduct, school discipline procedures, intermit financial statements, interim financial statement, dues, assemble delegation, committee liaison reports and public comment session. c) Explain how they are interdependent – The district holds business meetings where decisions are made and approved by the board. The members of the board discuss and vote on any changes that will be implemented.
2
d) How they have some degree of organization - Seating is rarely random. Describe how they are arranged and communication rules. The chairwoman and chairmen sit in the middle of the meeting and the members sit on both sides. Local policy governs the school board's parliamentary procedure. The majority of boards adhere to Roberts Rules of Order, which outlines how to conduct meetings, accept motions and votes, and perform other procedures. The secretary of the school board can provide information to the public on board procedures. The public is allowed to attend the meetings. The school board allows a certain amount of time for each person to make comments.
e) Reflect how they have a group perspective vs. individual perspectives. (one or two paragraphs) As a member of the school board, they do not have legal authority to solve problems
or make decisions individually. The school board members are required to communicate and share issues with fellow board members. The board member must gain support on their particular
issue by working together as a team.
3. What recommendations do you have to help the group be more effective toward reaching their goal. If you cannot identify recommendations (they would have to be very effective to not have areas for improvement) clearly explain why you believe the group was on track. (one or two paragraphs) According to surprise science of meetings, people complain about wasted time in meetings and this board meeting was informative and didn't waste time. (Rogelberg, 2019) The information provided in the agenda was covered, and the schedule was followed. Also, the meeting started on time which prevents frustration as stated in the surprise science of meeting video. Chairwoman Rye was clear when seeking answers and providing information. The board is very effective at establishing budget that will assist the superintendent and staff in running the
3
district. The members of the board researched the budget before implementing any changes. This board follows up in additional meetings on how the policy changes help or failed the school district. After deciding on a policy, this board holds the superintendent and employees responsible for the policy changes. 4. Give three examples of nonverbal messages interacting with verbal messages. (one - three paragraphs) The board maintained a professional presentation. The board had a horse shoe set up which allowed everyone to have eye contact. The two leaders as previously mentioned sat in the center of the table allowing people eye contact which “facilitates” participation. (Communication in the Real World: An Introduction to Communication Studies, 2022) The board members did lean forward when someone was speaking as a signal of interest and attentiveness. 5. Describe three channels of nonverbal communication which you observed. (one - three
paragraphs) The postures from the members of the bord indicate assertiveness and interest in the issues that were being address to the members of the board and public. The eye contact the board members made established connection and rapport. The ability to “encode appropriate turn-taking signals” helped to ensure during the meeting the conversation was smooth, without inappropriately interrupting someone who was speaking.
