An Effective Diagnostician One of the most important qualities of an effective Educational Diagnostician is to be able to work well and get along with not only children but adults as well. I also learned that having good communication skills and a personality that makes parents and students feel comfortable is also a critical component in order to be an effective educational diagnostician. Diagnosticians work with children, parents, and professionals on a daily basis. It is important for the Diagnostician to have a good attitude and personality in order to make the students, parents, and professionals feel content. After interviewing my mentor, she told me to always walk into meetings, parent interviews, and ARD meetings with a clear mind and a positive attitude. My mentor shared several conversations about where I am and the work, I must be willing to continue to put in to improve and get better at my job. My areas of strengths involve being able to successfully evaluate students, run reports, and interpret their results. In my opinion, interpreting the results of the evaluations is something I need more work on. Ms. Siverand commented on how well I have attentively listened, related, shown compassion and empathy for families with students receiving information that their child is recommended for special education services. When I first began attending ARD meetings, I could not control my emotions and I would cry sometimes but not in front of the ARD team. Although my official time is over in working with Ms. Siverand, she offered to continue working me once I become gainfully employed as an Educational Diagnostician to continue assisting, supporting, and pushing me to become an efficient leader. Our job as a Educational Diagnostician is to assess the student and identify their learning strengths and weaknesses. In using different evaluation instruments, we will be able to
identify specific learning needs that the student may have. The IEP team then develops a plan to meet the individual needs of the student. Many students and parents feel nervous and anxious as it is and as an effective diagnostician, it is my job to alleviate any thoughts or anxiousness. The diagnostician must have the ability to relate to multiple ways of thinking and be open- minded. We must be able to effectively communicate with a number of people including parents, administrators, teachers, and students of all ages. An effective diagnostician must also have the ability to resolve conflicts and defuse situations that may escalate and have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
