. Differentiation
Both intern teachers and student teachers can engage with the “Building Healthy Relationships?” Playbook based on their own teaching and learning experiences. Intern teachers, what SEL strategies are you currently implementing? Student teachers, where do you want to begin with strategies to Build Healthy Relationships in
your classroom?
Considerations
“When teaching social emotional learning, we are looking at the whole person. The emotions connected to
learning are inseparable.” (Angela Karem, Transitional Kindergarten Teacher)
Through your Playbook learning, how can you reflect on ways in which you can bring the whole child into classroom learning experiences? How will you create an environment that is safe, nurturing and empowering for each child that enters your room?
Card #1: Social Emotional Learning
SEL in Action:
List 3 SEL strategies you observe the teacher utilizing in the video “The Power of Relationships in
Schools”.
I found different strategies in the video. The first one was building positive healthy relationships. Another I observed was positive behavior support, and the third I noticed was promoting the development of empathy. In the video, the educator demonstrates several techniques related to social-emotional learning (SEL). The primary focus is on trust between the teacher and students through active engagement, the creation of a secure, and a welcoming atmosphere. The teacher dedicates time to actively listen to the students, and acknowledge their emotions and experiences. This also builds positive relationships. Lastly, the teacher encourages the students to effectively identify and express their emotions. She models emotional awareness by openly addressing her emotions and creating an atmosphere where students can share their own emotions. SEL Snapshot:
Read about the purpose and intention of a morning Greeting with students. Describe the process you will use with your students (identify your grade level) to develop a morning greeting and your intended purpose of the greeting. I am in a mixed class of 3
rd
– 4
th
graders. There are only about 11 students as they all have some form
of special needs. I think it would be possible to introduce a sign that reflects it is time to start the day. I could introduce a simple customized handshake with the kids as we start the day. This would help make them feel valued as our interactions can develop a relationship. Our new morning ritual lets the students know it’s time to begin. Think About It:
View the graphic titled “Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs
”. Choose one
of the five core elements (self-actualization, self-esteem, love and belonging, safety and security, physiological needs) and suggest one strategy you can utilize to cultivate this competency in the classroom. I have chosen self-esteem as the core element to cultivate on. My strategy would be to implement a growth mindset approach. This will include encouraging the student to celebrate their progress, and seeing their mistakes as part of the process. The purpose would be to build resilience so that students
can overcome obstacles.
Act on It: Set an attainable goal for yourself that articulates a vision you have for building classroom community. Over the course of this school year, I will aim to increase family involvement and engagement in the classroom. My vision is to establish a partnership with parents that implements regular communication channels and provides resources to parents. I hope to create a collaborative and supportive learning environment where families actively contribute to their children's education.

Card #2: SEL and Relationships
SEL in Action:
Watch the Friendship soup recipe video posted about relationship building in the classroom. Describe three ingredients you would use in your friendship soup.
In my friendship soup, my three essential components would be effective communication (both verbal and nonverbal), compassion, and teamwork. Communication helps create relationships and compassion serves as an element for nurturing relationships into healthy, positive relationships. Teamwork highlights the student's contributions within the classroom.
Think About It:
After viewing the video, reading the quotes, and reviewing the graphics, what are the core SEL
values you will apply in your classroom to establish relationships between students? Which competencies and themes are being emphasized in your classroom, and which are areas for growth? How will you assess whether your students are developing healthy peer relationships?
The core SEL values I will apply in my classroom are respect, empathy, and cooperation. The competencies being emphasized in my classroom are social awareness, relationship creating and maintaining, and responsible decision-making. One area for growth for me could be self-
management. Think About It:
Think about your answers to the previous questions posed in the “Think About It” section. Identify strategies you might use in your own classroom and develop a plan of action using the provided downloadable form. Add to Your Personal Action Plan.
Objective: Build a Positive Classroom Community and Establish Healthy Peer Relationships Strategies: Implementing daily morning routines where students gather in a circle to share and listen
to each other about their weekend. This will allow an opportunity for students to connect and develop a sense of belonging. Action Steps: Allocate 10 minutes at the beginning of each day for morning sessions. Encourage participation and active listening by priming rules and expectations. Cooperative Learning: Incorporate cooperative learning strategies into lessons and activities to promote teamwork, collaboration, and positive peer interactions. Action Steps: Designate group work and activities that require students to work together, requiring them to communicate with each other.
Card #3: SEL and Empathy
Intro: Watch the 60 second participation and create
a positive learning environment video
. What practices do you engage in to create a culture of respect and trust, and prepare students to learn?
There are many practices I can implement that will help create a positive learning environment. I will
begin by modeling respectful behavior, setting clear expectations, and actively listening to my students. I can also focus on positive reinforcement, conflict resolution skills, and transparency for my classroom dynamic.
SEL in Action:
Greeting, sharing and responding, checking in on our classroom expectations, plus a quick wrap-
around closing are integral in developing positive peer relationships. How does each of these components accomplish this?
Greeting helps promote a sense of welcome and inclusivity, making students feel valued by their peers. Sharing helps students express their thoughts, helps practice understanding others' perspectives, and helps develop empathy. By finishing the day on a positive note, students are left with a positive impression of the classroom environment. Think About It:
Review the graphic “Guidelines for Creating Effective Classroom Rules”. Share how you will implement two of the suggestions.
One of the suggestions I would implement is involving students in the rule/expectation part of an activity. This will give students a higher sense of control over the activity and will raise their chances of engagement. The students will also have a higher chance of following the rules they created. Act on It: Think about the intentional strategies listed above in “Plan It”.
List three strategies that are appropriate for your grade level and subject area. For 3
rd
– 4
th
graders some appropriate strategies to implement would be hands-on learning experiences in subjects like math and science. At this grade students are beginning to use teamwork as a form to enhance communication and critical thinking skills.

Card #__5
__: Title: As an educator, how do I build healthy relationships with my students' parents?
SEL in Action:
Watch the video and provide a 3-5 sentence summary of your learning and how it connects to your SEL comprehension so far.
The video connects to social emotional learning by explaining the education gap. I realized that all students deserve my commitment. The speaker mentioned that sometimes teachers and parents don't always agree but it’s important to remember they want the same things for the students. Teachers need to communicate with parents. My role as a teacher will depend on the students' needs. As a teacher of special education my job will be to advocate for my students to minimize the gap.
Think About It:
Answer each of the guided reflection questions in this section.
Think about what you are currently doing in your classroom to implement consistent communication and approachability with parents? List your strategies on a piece of paper. From the information in this Playbook, what other strategies can you adapt to your classroom, and add to your list to enhance the teacher-parent partnership? -
In the classroom I’m in, we send home a parent/teacher communication log. In my own class I would like to implement email or text communication with parents. How are you celebrating cultural differences in your communication to acknowledge various cultures and languages? As a teacher, how are you planning to increase your cultural awareness, and decrease your implicit (unconscious) bias (pertaining to race, ability, gender, culture, religion, language, etc.)? -
In the classroom I’m in, we celebrate all major holidays and even the students’ birthdays. We have to keep in mind that some families may not celebrate some holidays so we must always ask first. We can
also ask the parents to share some cultural insights.
List the opportunities you have in place to augment parent involvement. Ask your fellow teachers what they have in place, and see if you would like to use any variables that work in their classroom. -
In the classroom I’m in, we celebrate students of the month, where we encourage parents to celebrate their child at home as well.
