my mother died, I don’t have anyone.”
Client:”I mean she did everything for me, I just don’t think I can do this”
Nurse: “And what exactly makes you say this?”
Client: I just told you, she did everything for me”
Nurse: “Dont worry, things will get better soon. I know exactly how you feel. I felt the same way when I lost my father. Perhaps uou should just focus on something else to get her off
your mind”
Verbal
Verbal communication
-is the use of
written or spoken words to send a message. It is influenced by such factors as educational background, culture, language, age, and past experiences.(
Wilkinson, J. M. (2019)
Therapeutic
-Therapeutic communication is critical
to building a trusting relationship with
dying or grieving patients and their significant others.
T
he nurse asked the patient if he was doing any better. This showed she cared. She stated she felt the same way when her father died. She was placing
herself in his situation. She stated her name and why she was
there. This showed some professionalism and developed a rapport with the patient.
Non-therapeutic -Non-therapeutic words, phrases, actions, and tones that make a patient feel uncomfortable, increase their stress, and worsen their mental and even physical well-being.
The nurse said,” not to worry, things will get better.
-When a nurse says this, it shows false hope, and she has no way of knowing this is going to turn out ok.
Nurse stated: “perhaps you should just focus on something else to ger her off your mind”
When a client loses a parent and feels
hopeless, the last thing they want to do takes their mind off them. The nurse dismissed his feelings. She did not show empathy to the patient.
She asked a closed-ended question. Are you feeling any better now?”
She asked the patient the same question twice. Shows she was not paying attention. Alternate Response
I
would not give false hope. The patient needs you to be honest. This can lead to the patient not trusting you. I would show empathy by expressing “I am sorry for the loss of your mother. Are there any coping techniques you have used?”
I would maintain eye contact with the
patient to show him I am actively listening. I would have repeated what the patient stated and asked him to elaborate on it. The patient stated he did not think he could do this anymore. I would have asked him what type of tasks his mother helped him with and get resources to help him with these tasks. Non verbal
-Non-verbal communication is the exchange of messages without the use

of spoken words. Because it emerges from feelings on a more unconscious level, your patient’s body language, including posture, gesture, movement, facial expression, and eye
gaze, can tell you how he is coping with what he is hearing and how he is
processing the information. (
Wilkinson, J. M. (2019)
Therapeutic
-The nurse had open arms. She was slightly leaning forward. This shows she was open to conversation.
Non-therapeutic
-Not paying full attention by not making eye contact. -Her facial expressions show she did not want to be there. She kept raising her eyebrows. Turning her head. She seemed judgmental like she did not care. -The nurse's tone of voice was monotone. -She lacked empathy because of her tone of voice and her lack of eye contact.
Alternate Response
-
I would have used a tone that would show him I am caring and showing empathy.
-I would face the patient and make eye contact. I would lean in more to show him I was listening. I would have nodded my head to show I was actively listening. -I would not cross my legs. This shows you are insecure about the conversation. If I were the patient and had to interact with that nurse, I would have felt judged, annoyed, and uncomfortable. I would not want to tell the nurse about my feelings. I would want my nurse to show they cared and were there for me, not give me false hope. References: Wilkinson, J. M. (2019).
