Topic 3 DQ 1 Jan 4-6, 2024 Read the Instructional Strategies to Improve College Students' APA Style Writing article located in Class Resources. Based on your understanding of this article, identify two ways professors can better teach APA to students (100 -125 words). Please share three things you learned about APA that will help you become a stronger writer. (100-125 words). Based on the reading from Instructional Strategies to Improve College Students' APA Style Writing , two ways professors can better teach APA to students would be to (2015): 1. Allow student to learn from their errors in their own work. a. Professors can provide students with an incentive (i.e., small extra credit or a revised grade) by allowing students to make the necessary corrections to any APA errors on previously submitted work after having reviewed any detailed comments inserted into the paper by the professor detailing the APA errors needing ramification. 2. Professors can teach students to recognize their APA errors by highlighting them in the work submitted so students can avoid making the same mistakes when submitting future works (Mandernach et. al., 2015, pgs. 410-11). a. Professors may also provide additional APA templates/examples not previously given so that students have additional resources to reference when writing APA papers later in the course. Three plus things I learned about APA that will help me become a stronger writer are knowing the following categories of papers that can being written (2011): a. Empirical studies : are based on theories or ideas, but on actual data; takes the data from observations and experiments to generate research reports. b. Literature reviews : purpose is to gather information about a current issue or problem and to communicate where that issue or problem stands today; it analyzes another individual’s work or a group of works and sheds light on issues while also attempting to fill in any gaps with suggestions for future research and methods. c. Theoretical articles : are like literature reviews in that the author collects, examines, and shares information about a current issue or problem, by using others’ research. It is different from literature reviews in that it attempts to explain or solve a problem by coming up with a new theory that is justified with valid evidence.
d. Methodological articles : utilizes data or documentation researched by the author to prove that their new method, or improvement to a method, is valid; the articles will showcase new advances, or modifications to an existing practice, in a scientific method or procedure: the writer stives to explains the current method being used in addition to his/her own findings in an effort to help the reader better understand and modify his/her own current practices. e. Case studies : present information related an individual, group, or larger set of individuals that has been analyzed for a specific reason; the writer reports on the method and conclusions from their study and may even make suggestions for future research, create possible theories, and/or determine a solution to a problem (EasyBib, 2011). Topic 3 DQ 2 Jan 4-8, 2024 What is a summary? A summary is a short overview of something you have read. You are taking in the information and condensing that information into an overview for the reader. A summary differs from a paraphrase; remember, a paraphrase is you restating what the author said using your own words. Based on your reading of chapter 6 in Mastering Graduate Studies and the Academic Writer Tutorial: Basics of Seventh Edition APA Style Lesson 7 “Bias-Free Language,” (located in Topic 2 Class Resources) share three things you learned about summarizing that will help you become a stronger writer. (200-250 words). Based on the reading of chapter 6 in Mastering Graduate Studies and the Academic Writer Tutorial: Basics of Seventh Edition APA Style Lesson 7 “Bias-Free Language,” the following three things learned about summarizing will help me become a stronger writer: 1. A summary is written in one’s own words, not the words of the originating author(s). 2. A summary contains only the ideas of the original text. 3. A summary does not include the insertion of one’s own opinions, interpretations, deductions or comments of the subject(s) (Lumen Learning, n.d.). I also found the following from Lumen Learning (n.d.) to be helpful when needing further clarification on how to properly format a summary: The summary should be in the form of a paragraph. A summary will begin with an introductory sentence that states the text’s title, author and main point of the text as you see it. The summary should identify in order the significant sub-claims the author uses to defend the main point (Lumen Learn, n.d.). Resources Lumen Learning. (n.d.). How to write a summary . Topic 4 DQ 1 (Obj. 4.3, 4.4 and 4.7) Jan 11-13, 2024 Please review these three social work dispositions. In three separate paragraphs, answer the following prompts (each answer should be approx. 100 words). Please refer to the NASW Code of Ethics and conduct research on the dispositions to provide detailed research-based answers (not personal opinions) for these questions. Be sure you cite each reference in proper APA formatting in your responses. Self-disclosure : Define self-disclosure by providing an example. According to Ofer Zur, Ph.D. (2022), there are four types of self-disclosures, one of which would be exemplified by placing a photograph on one’s desk in his/her office; this would be a deliberate disclosure. The other three types of disclosures are: unavoidable, accidental and client initiated. NOTE: deliberate disclosures also contain two sub-types: self-revealing and self- involving (Zur, 2022). When is self-disclosure therapeutically beneficial for a client? Self-disclosure becomes therapeutically beneficial for a client when used sparingly, professionally, and appropriately in such a way as to build trust between the counselor/therapist and the client/patient (Bray, 2019). However, counselors/therapists should be mindful when using self-disclosure due to there being a possibility of derailment in therapeutic progress and because too much self-disclosure can take focus off the client/patient; self-disclosure should be utilized with care and in small doses (Bray, 2019). What is one precaution we need to take as social workers if we choose to disclose? One precaution needing to be taken as a social worker if one chooses to self-disclose is to learn through training, and later experience, how, when and/or whether to utilize self- disclosure with a client/patient in the first place (Bray, 2019). Accurately advised, “ counselors should consider it a tool to keep in reserve, using it only when appropriate — and with clear intention” (Bray, 2019). Objectivity:
What is objectivity? Objectivity as it applies to the field of social work, is defined as: “ the principle of examining situations without bias” (Gaurav, 2014). Why must social workers remain objective with clients in order to be effective? By remaining objective with clients/patients, social workers are better able to avoid his/her personal bias and personal values from having an influence on the client/patient (Social Work Test Prep, 2022). Objectivity allows social workers’ decisions to be better informed and allows him/her to better identify resources for treatment while also being able to formulate the best plan of action when helping the client/patient (Bray, 2019). Provide one example of a population or case that would challenge your ability to be objective with that client. One population or case that would challenge my ability to be objective with a client would have to be working with families, children and adolescents suffering from physical and/or sexual abuse. Having grown up with a physically and emotionally abusive alcoholic father, it would be a bit more difficult to remain objective and unbiased if the assailant being discussed by the client/patient is the patriarch of the household. What's one way you plan to handle that situation? I plan to handle these types of situations by trying to emotionally disassociate myself when I first become aware of the similarities between the client/patient’s situation and my own personal experiences. I hope to accomplish this by reminding myself that the welfare of the client/patient needs to supersede my own. Self-care: Why can happen when social workers experience burn-out? According to Janet Philbin and Alisha Powell (2023), the following are signs and symptoms of burn-out social workers can experience and should be cognizant of throughout one’s career: o Struggling with maintaining focus in both one’s personal and professional life. o Having lack of patience (e.g., snapping at one’s coworkers, becoming easily frustrated, etc.).

o Exhaustion both mentally and physically to the point of illness if not recognized and rectified. o Loss of enthusiasm in aspects of both personal and professional life. o Physical pain and illness. Work related stress can induce headaches, stomachaches, fatigue, body aches, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and in cases of chronic stress resulting from burn-out, a weakened immune system. o Compassion fatigue: a type of burnout experienced by those working in professions geared towards helping others that exhibits symptoms such as: emotional exhaustion, mental exhaustion, isolation through decreased interactions with coworkers, friends, and family members, loss of accomplishment or pride in work, physical exhaustion, physical symptoms with no physical cause, d epression, loss of self-worth, lack of motivation, lessening of cognitive ability and emotional regulation, sleep or behavior issues, trouble in personal relationships, and anger issues. o Secondary traumatic stress: a form of emotional pain and duress felt when hearing about the first-hand traumatic experiences of others that can be experienced by anyone in a helping profession (e.g., social workers, nurses, psychiatrist, psychologists, victim advocates, etc.) (Philbin & Powell, 2023). Who (name all groups or people) does it impact? In an interesting study authored by Giacomo Angelini (2023) titled Big Five model personality traits and job burnout: A systematic literature review published in BioMed Central reveals burn- out is universal in the types of groups or people it has in impact on. The sample of 36,627 participants consisted of the following impacted professions (2023): o 26% Teachers or Professors o 22% Nurses o 11% Physicians with various specializations o 10% Policemen o 10% Health professionals o 8% Clerks, of which about 5% worked with IT o 3% Drivers o less than 2% ICT Manager and Firefighters o 9% worked in miscellaneous professions (Angelini, 2023).
Nevertheless, no group or persons are immune to the impacted of burn-out if he/she does not take the necessary steps in maintaining adequate self-care. List three ways that you will incorporate self-care into your daily or weekly routine to prevent professional burnout. Self-care can be incorporated into my daily or weekly routine to prevent professional burnout in the following, but not limited, ways (2023): o Taking time to meditate o Getting plenty of exercise and adequate amounts of sleep o Keeping a journal o Taking necessary breaks (e.g., vacation time, personal days off to decompress, etc.) o Maintaining healthy boundaries by making myself a priority and protecting my personal emotional space (Philbin & Powell, 2023). Topic 4 DQ 2 (Obj. 4.8) Jan 11-15, 2024 Whether you're a student or a working professional, there are many benefits to being a part of a professional social work organization. Please review a professional social work organization in your area that you are interested in and explain the benefits of being a part of that organization as it relates to your professional development, academic engagement, opportunities for internships, continuing education, and potential job placement. If there is not one nearby or of interest to you, feel free to find something else you can join virtually. Please note if there are membership fees, regular meetings (virtual or otherwise), a specific focus (e.g., policy, BIPOC, social justice issues), and anything else that makes that organization unique.
