Report
The incident you shared in class of a former student’s colleague stealing reams of paper from their office was thought provoking for me. | found myself contemplating how | would have acted. | am not one to keep my mouth shut, and yet | feel it is unlikely that | would have reported my colleague or gone to HR. The one instance where | reported a far more egregious workplace violation backfired on me for not knowing the proper channels of communication and chain of command. afterall , it was my first week of work, and | was fresh out of college. | had naively gone directly to my direct supervisor with my discovery. | didn’'t question whether that individual might also be involved. In the real world, ethical dilemmas often intersect with political career decisions. The decision to report or not report a colleague is both a moral decision and a career decision. | also found it interesting when you asked the question, would it make a difference if you had a sick child at home and needed health insurance for their sake. That was an interesting question to ask, and made me wonder which factor(s) might be more influential to my classmates- responsibility to one's company, to one’s child, and moreover does the child being ill impact our obligation to them? Do we have a greater responsibility to provide our ill children with insurance over our healthy ones?
