nstructional methods:
Is it lecture-based? Collaborative? Are there question and answer sessions? Hands-on activities? Worksheets? How does the teacher incorporate multiple learning styles and needs into lesson plans? What is the percentage of time devoted to the 4 skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and the
5th skill of thinking? How are the textbooks used during instruction? How was the lesson introduced? Presented? What instructional activities were used? How cognitively demanding were they? Were the activities context embedded or context reduced? How did the teacher connect students' prior knowledge, life experience, and interest with learning goals?
In the video, different instructional methods are used. The video started off lecture-based regarding the teacher demonstrating what is going to occur. The video also is collaborative with the whole class and group work such as reading their writing in front of the class and working in groups with finding vivid verbs on a worksheet. The teacher incorporates multiple learning styles and needs into lesson plans by giving the students a choice to write about and
with the worksheet, the students have a choice to either highlight the word, circle, or write “vv”. I would say that the teacher equally devoted the 5 skills within the classroom. I do not feel like the teacher focused more on one certain skill than the other. No textbooks were used
during instruction. The activity that was context embedded was when students would write in their journals. The teacher connected the students’ prior knowledge by asking questions such
as “do you remember when”. Students:
Are they focused? Are they actively participating? Is the teacher interacting with all of students? Do they understand the activity and the purpose? Are they working together well? How do they interact with the teacher?
The students were focused and actively participating. The students were raising their hands, making a “v” with their hand when they heard vivid words. The teacher interacts with all students especially with small group work. While the teacher interacts with the students, the teacher uses eye connection. The students understand the activity and the purpose. The students are working together well, especially with positive feedback on the students’ writing. The students interact with the teacher in a positive and respectful way. The students have great manners and while talking to the teacher, the student is smiling. Classroom management: What is the daily routine? How are the daily objectives implemented? Are there a variety of activities? How does the teacher create and
maintain an effective educational environment for students?
The daily routine looks like the class meets together on the rug and the teacher will talk about
the day and what to expect. The teacher reads a book and will ask the students questions. The activity shown is reading a book, writing in their journal, sharing their story in front of the class, and then working in groups. The teacher create and maintain an effective educational environment for students by providing positive feedback, participating in the activity, showing equal respect to the student, and by learning as a class (not having them feel alone). Instructional Technology: Does the teacher use visuals and/or instructional technology
(e.g., VCR, TV, Internet, and computer software)? Manipulatives?
The teacher uses visuals throughout the classroom with posters. The teacher uses a projector/camera. The students and the teacher can put their notebook or paper under a camera which displays on the whiteboard. Assessment: Is there an assessment in this observation?
How did the teacher assess the students' learning?
The teacher assesses the students’ learning by whole class, small group, and individual work.
The teacher assesses the students’ learning when the student shares in front of the class or else individual work when the student highlights or writes vv (vivid verb). The teacher also works with each student to assess the students’ learning. No assessment in this observation.
Week 5 Observation Reflection
1.
As you reflect on the lessons, how did it actually unfold as compared to what you have
been learning about teaching reading and writing? I like this video due to how everything unfolded. The teacher was very respectful to the students by eye connection, positive feedback, smiling to the students, and participating in the activity (writing her own story and sharing it in front of the class). The teacher included whole class, group, and individual work. The teacher also included everyone in the class. What really stood out to me was when the teacher was reading her story in front of the class and saying, “I have to go back and fix that sentence, that did not make sense”. This shows students that even teachers mess up.
2. As you reflect over these observations, what ideas or insights are you discovering about teaching reading and writing? Watching this video, I obtained more ideas or insights over these observations about reading and writing. The first idea is to participate with the students in the activity and show the students a mistake I made to show that it is okay to mess up. Another observation is making eye connection and smile to the students, this shows positive affirmation.
