Each Review Quiz will open with one to two essay questions. The Review Quiz Essay Questions will highlight central themes/innovations/cultural events important to the era. The question are are posted below so you can think about them as you're reading the chapter. CH 01 Essay Questions 1. Thinking about the things that television offers (and privileges) that are different from radio, what are some ways the entertainment industry’s move from radio to television in the late 1940s may have affected which artists became popular and which did not? 2. The boundaries between pop, country and western, and rhythm and blues were defined by geography and/or race in the minds of the music industry, with pop assumed to be consumable by everybody. Country and western was for white people in the South and the West, and rhythm and blues was for black audiences. Once it emerged, rock and roll would not only prove these boundaries to be based on false premises but would also throw another into the mix: age of the audience. With these ideas in mind, are there boundaries in place between pop, country and western, and rhythm and blues today? If so, are they rooted in geography, race, age, or something different? Student Entry EXAMPLE 3 Foreigner - "Feels Like the First Time" Lyrics and music by Mick Jones and produced by John Sinclair and Gary Lyons. This song reached # 4 on the US charts and # 39 on the UK charts in mid 1977. This song was on the Foreigner album, this album reached # 4 in the US and did not chart in the UK. The form used in this song is a modified compound AABA with A sections based on contrasting verse chorus form. The introduction starts off with a distortion guitar, stop-time bass, and then later drums enter followed by the drums and the full band. The first verse starts off with the lead vocals along with the music gradually building up
from quieter to louder, distorted guitar is introduced and following is the back up vocals. The first chorus begins staying at a loud volume with choral vocals and synthesizer on top as before in the first verse. The second verse is similar to the first verse although the rhythmic guitar is introduced during the quiet parts along with the back up vocals. The first bridge begins with a change of meter to 2/2 and change of key to minor with classical music played to compliment the harmony. The last three choruses all repeat similarly although the second chorus use improvised lead vocals. The final bridge consists of virtuosic guitar solo, bass, drums and as before in the second chorus improvised vocals. The instruments used in this song are: Electric guitars, bass, synthesizer, organ lead and back up vocals. The lyrical content in this song: This song is describing the affection for a women and the lengths he would go through to prove his love to her. The song continues to talk of his feelings for her and suggest that when he’s with her it feels like it’s the first time. This is repeated throughout the song and ends with the same repeated chorus “feels like the first time” . Student Entry EXAMPLE 4 3. Foreigner - "Feels Like the First Time" - Written by Mick Jones, the song explains how a man describes his admiration towards a woman, who, is implied to make him feel as though its his first time having “relations” with a woman . Written in modified compounded AABA , the sections based on contrasting verse-chorus form , the song begins with an introduction using the distorted guitar, followed by stop time drums and bass, along with a sparkling progressive rock synthesizer playing over it. This concludes with the full band and the drumbeat entering. Giving a sort of beginning of time and creation sound, the first verse begins as the vocals enter, the sing crescendos and diminuendos as the distorted guitar comes in and out along with addition back up vocals, this is all done as the chords become higher. The chorus begins at it’s highest and loudest, with full choral vocals and the synthesizer on top, the end phrase almost appears to be at the highest point of the singer’s range. The second verse begins with several changes including the addition of the rhythmic guitar as the song gets quieter and along with the back up vocals entering earlier than before. The first bridge comes in with a tempo change as well as a key change from major to minor, this adds to the classical effect of the bridge and may be a reference to the “first time” music was written down. This is followed by the chorus which remains the same other than several vocal improvisations from the lead vocals to play off of the choral statement from the melody. The second bridge comes in with a guitar solo, stop bass and drums, from the introduction which could revert back to “the first time” they were played, and several improvised vocal interjections. The last A section, includes the chorus from the second A section and ends with a repeat of the chorus and a fade out.

Student Entry EXAMPLE 5 "Feels like the First Time" is a song by Foreigner recorded in 1977. This song uses a compound AABA form with a 4/4 time signature ( 2/2 during the first bridge section). The lyrics are about how the singer feels like its the first time hes ever fallen in love because that's how special this girl is. Instruments used include electric guitars, bass, drums, synthesizer, and organ. I really like the synthesizer on this song. I generally enjoy progressive rock a lot and this song totally gives me those vibes. There was also a guitar solo in the last bridge section that sounded great. Very fun song.
