What was the most challenging part of delegation?
The most challenging part of this delegation was the interprofessional communication interaction with Holly when correcting her for misinterpretation of the providers orders. Finding the balance between being direct without being accusing with a challenge between the available selections. I felt that I wanted to select the answers that addressed the problem directly, but not have Holly feel like I was placing the blame on her. It’s important to be understanding during interprofessional communications so our co-
workers won’t have to feel defensive and breakdown communication. It is also important to be direct while addressing the situation to avoid confusion and misinterpretation of the conversation to address and fix the current issue. Finding the balance between the being understanding and direct is a great way to show support and accountability to our co-workers and is essential qualities in a good leader.
What do you think went well during this simulation?
I feel the bedside report went well and talking with Nadia about her role in the issue with Mr. Liu also went well. I felt comfortable with getting all the correct information about Mr. Liu during his bedside report. When talking with Nadia about the chest tube clamp issue of Mr. Liu I felt it was important to make sure Nadia felt that her care and concern was appreciated, but ultimately knew that it was not her responsibility to assess and provide the intervention for Mr. Liu. What are your strengths as a communicator?
As a communicator, I feel that my strengths are being supportive. While talking to my co-workers in this simulation the questions that provide re-assurance and solutions felt more natural during this assignment.
What was challenging about this simulation? What will you do differently next time?
The challenging aspect of this simulation was selecting the communication prompts that were more about accountability. Some of the responses felt unprofessional and had the potential to cause a breakdown in communication to cause the co-worker to become defensive. Next time I would like to take a different approach to the accountability aspect of the conversations. The accountability issues need to be addressed in the conversation and I will attempt to be more direct
while keeping a respectful tone and understanding of the situation. Deepening
How did this assignment affect your development toward proficiency with leadership concepts in a hospital setting? This assignment opened my eyes to some areas of improvement in communication that I was unaware of. It was a great way to show me the areas I am comfortable in and the areas I am
uncomfortable in. This will allow me to address and improve the areas I felt uncomfortable in to make the communication and leadership I provide more efficient. The area I need to improve is being more direct and holding others more accountable. I can start improving these areas now by putting this into practice in my current job. The more exposure and practice I get with this portion
of communication the more comfortable I will be with it, allowing me to overcome these challenges by the time I am placed in a leadership role in the medical care setting.
