Introduction
“If we can make more diverse colors, people, and stories, it will be interesting. Uniforms are for the military and the police not our thinking”- Daniela Vega
Our school currently has a uniform policy in place. The policy is meant to ensure students do not wear inappropriate attire and promote a cohesion standard. The social dilemma this creates in our school is that many families can not afford uniforms. This causes situations where students only have one outfit to wear for a whole week, and sometimes it's dirty. Students are sent out of class and miss instruction. Key Elements and Negative Impacts
One element of this dilemma is that some young students often get themselves and sometimes siblings ready for school because of working parents or other difficult household situations. When young students are already being put into a situation of having to be more responsible than
an average child their age why should we add more difficulty to the situation by requiring them to have to make sure they are in a uniform instead of finding any clean appropriate clothes and get dressed for school. Students who get themselves ready also sometimes only have dirty clothes to choose from that are uniform and get bullied because they are wearing dirty clothes or the same clothes, they wore the day before. Another element is that not all teachers follow the uniform policy with the same standard level. If some teachers are very strict and constantly send students to the office, or home because they do not have light blue instead of navy blue, but other teachers are more forgiving this creates another negative impact. According to Jiminez (2023) Student uniform policy, although often created in the name of safety, some of these rules
can jeopardize students' well-being. This is because of the discipline in response to
violations
takes learning time away from kids Jiminez (2023)
.
So, is sending students home or to the office because of what they are wearing or not wearing conducive to an environment that puts education and the whole child first?
Another dilemma is that school uniform is an outdated idea that can be traced to the 16
th
century in England where impoverished children were to wear them. According to an article (Britannica 2021), other unethical and outdated roots of school uniforms are tied to government-run boarding
schools for Native American children who had been removed from their families. Not having a modern dress code policy creates a hindrance to individuality and suppresses equity. We are supposed to celebrate diversity and foster an environment that recognizes uniqueness. When we tell students that they must all dress the same is that fostering uniqueness and diversity Proposed Resolution
One report in USA Today states that the
number of schools with strict dress
codes is
dwindling Schools with
dress codes considered to be strict
had dropped by about
10%
in
2020 compared to the 2013-14 school year,
though
only a small number
of schools (Jiminez 2023). There can be some common ground and meeting in the middle. Students should have more freedom but still abide by the district dress code. The dress code policy should enforce that students are wearing appropriate clothing that is not too revealing, and make sure that drug or gang-related slogans are not visible. Students can wear solid colors but be limited to a couple of color choices. This policy would allow more options for parents to buy affordable clothes that are on sale, or from second-hand stores. This policy would help students have more choices if the
laundry has not been done in their house. Results Modifying the current uniform policy and allowing more freedom of what students wear to school will have many positive side effects. Students can enjoy a truly free education with the extra expense of purchasing uniforms. Students will have less stress when getting ready for school and more clean clothes to choose from creating a more positive self-image. Faculty can focus on academics and finding solutions for education-related topics versus uniform enforcement. Diversity can be embraced without the restriction that uniforms put on students' freedom of expression. Conclusion
One of my values in my code of ethics is doing what is right for students. I do not believe what students wear has the distraction on education that we have been led to believe. Students' uniqueness should be celebrated and embraced. Students should not be punished for not wearing the correct outfit to school and not miss out on any part of the educational instruction because of it. We want to teach our students to think differently, outside of the box, and be creative so why are we encouraging them to dress in the same cookie-cutter clothes?
