Environment Change
Due Week 5
Environmental Change Planning Form
**** You can use the learning experience plan form in place of this form if
preferred.
Max # of Children at a time
# of Adults Needed
3 to 4 children at a time
1 adult nearby to supervise
Idea Description:
I am planning to set up a love letter station with a low currently unused table. There will
be organized baskets with paper, cards, envelopes, stickers, pens, pencils, and a
clipboard to write on. I will cover the table with a piece of light pink fabric to give the
table a neutral background for the activity. I will also have the children’s names written
out as a visual for them to sign their names on their cards. There will be a plastic
mailbox on the table to add a creative aspect to the play.
Originating Ideas:
What is this planned environment/experience based on?
What did you
observe
children doing specifically that made you think of this planned
environment or experience? How is this environment change/experience based on your
perceptions of
children’s interests, play preferences,
or of the
questions
children are
asking of the world?
I have watched the children play school with our circle time board. They also pull out
small whiteboards with dry-erase markers and they write each other notes on the table.
My focus child is learning to connect and make friendships. I thought that this would be
a great friendship activity for him. He has expressed “do you want to play with me?” I
would like to expand on this by writing letters to family and friends. He also is working
on mastering writing his name.
The children are exploring the normal February holiday and we are discussing how
important it is to express love to others.
The children are also very creative and like having the independence to loose supplies
to make things. This environment change will be letter making and should facilitate that
interest.
How do you think children’s responses to your planned environment/experience will
contribute to their
development
or
understanding
of the world?
I think that the children will connect that giving notes that they have taken the time to
make and give them to other people with love. They will demonstrate their ability to work
1
in a small space and share supplies with classmates. Also, the will be able to
incorporate dramatic play into the new play space.
Preparation:
What do you need to do to
prepare
for the environment change/activity?
Put the fabric on a small table. Set up and organize supplies, so that they are easy to
see and access.
What
materials
do you need to pull together? Where will you get the materials?
I will need paper, envelopes, pens, bins, drawers. I will get the supplies from the dollar
store and thrift store.
Identify five (5)
vocabulary words
to use that will enhance children’s experience in the
environment or with the activity.
1. Cooperation
2. Affection
3. Community
4. Envelope
5. Celebration
Planning for Day of Implementation:
How will you be “
ready to go
” when the children arrive? What needs to be portioned
out? What needs to be put in place?
I will have the activity/environment change set up before the children come into the
class for the day. The other teacher and I will communicate when the children come in
that the area is for free play later in the day. The children will play on the large rug until
circle time as normal.
What directions do you need to provide to the other adults in the room? How many
adults are needed?
I have communicated to the other teacher that I work with what I am implementing and
how it will be a 3 to 4 child activity.
Only one teacher to supervise the play is needed. This environment change is set up for
children to play independently.
Describe exactly what you will do at the
beginning
of the environment/experience.
How will you
introduce
the environment change/experience to the children?
The other teacher will announce that I have set up a new space to play in for this month.
I will let the children know that it is a 3 to 4 children activity and that they all need to
share the spot and take turns. It will be in the classroom for lots of days, so there is
plenty of time to play with it.
2
Describe exactly what you will do during the
middle
of the environment/experience.
Describe the
learning prompts
you will use.
I will observe and listen to play. Specific comment on writing skills, name writing, sticker
use, sharing the space, and how the person that they are making their cards for will like
them, why they might like them, and how the children are creatively using the mailbox
Describe exactly what you will do during the
end
of the environment/experience. How
will you close interaction in the environment/experience? How will you organize clean
up?
I will discuss that the month is coming to an end and it’s now time to move on with new
topics and fun activities in class. I will take all the remaining supplies and the mailbox
home. I will thank all the children for their participation.
How will you collect
data/documentation
on your planned environment change or
activity? Remember photographing must take place using the CFS camera.
I have taken a picture of the space prior to the environment change. I will take pictures
of the children using the space during the school day. I will also make observation notes
in my practicum journal to note the learning aspects of the activity.
