Midterm Exam: Reflective Op-Ed Paper You will write a personal and reflective Op-Ed (Opinion Piece) for publication in the fictional
winter edition of the Community and Justice Services Newsletter entitled “You Inspire Me”, by choosing a person you aspire to be like in the future (Your future self). Using materials covered in the course thus far, you will convince readers of why you believe this
future version of yourself is deserving of the prestigious CJS Person of the Year Award
. This fictional
award recognizes individuals in society who uses/used a critical anti-oppressive lens to advocate for social justice issues locally or globally while demonstrating excellent interpersonal communication skills. Your aim is to appeal to readers of the newsletter to vote for your nominee. In addition, you will identify your strengths and limitations and create a plan to develop your interpersonal skills as you visualize yourself in the future. Examples of Social issues are not limited to the rights of Indigenous peoples, violence against women and girls, human trafficking, gender equity, affordable childcare, homelessness, food insecurity, mental health/addiction issues etc.
This will enable you to test the theories taught in class and apply them to a person that you admire as well as to your interpersonal communication growth. All responses must be related to the social justice work your nominee is doing.
ASSIGNMENT OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
1.
Communicate effectively (with dignity, respect and integrity) in writing.
2.
Practice perspective-taking to promote engagement, empowerment and inclusive practice while showing tolerance and suspension of judgment.
3.
Demonstrate the ability to engage in healthy social comparison for self-development.
4.
Identify strategies to enhance a few interpersonal communication skills of your choice.
5.
Reflect on your own interpersonal growth and areas for development.
6.
Receive feedback on your ability to write an academic reflective paper.
7.
Demonstrate competency in using APA-style academic writing.
8.
Assess your ability to follow instructions and meet deadlines while paying attention to detail.
INSTRUCTIONS:
The ability to follow instructions as well as being a good writer are great interpersonal skills. Please take the time to read the instructions carefully and review your paper before submitting it. You must adhere to the following criteria. Up to 50% will be deducted as per the rubric.

Assessment and Value
a.
This is an individual exam assignment.
b.
Grading is based on the depth of your
reflection as well as the connections made
to course materials. It is worth 15% of your final grade.
3.
Framework
a.
Your Op-Ed (Opinion Piece) must be a minimum of three (3) full pages and a maximum of five (5) pages in length, not including the cover and reference page. Additional pages will not be read or graded.
b.
Your Op-Ed (Opinion Piece) must be typed, left aligned, double spaced using Calibri or Arial size 12 font with 1-inch margins. c.
Your paper MUST be saved using an appropriate file name and uploaded in either Word or PDF format. (Inability to open your file will result in a grade of 0.
It is your responsibility to ensure your submission can be accessed by the reader)
d.
The completed exam assignment must be uploaded using the Op-Ed (Opinion Piece) Dropbox on Blackboard as ONE (1) file.

Content
1.
In your Op-Ed, you must apply theories and concepts from each of the class discussions, and readings from weeks 2 to 7 inclusive, citing them a minimum of six (6) times
throughout your paper. (For clarity, that means directly quoting or paraphrasing the readings in a meaningful way) No additional/external reference sources can be used, except for the first question where you introduce your nominee. Papers that do not include in-text citations at least 6 times along with a reference page will not be graded. They will be returned to you for resubmission within 48 hours with a 30% deduction.
2.
Please use the headings as indicated below to structure your Op-Ed. Each question or new idea should begin with a new paragraph. Assignments submitted as one large paragraph will be returned to you with a 30% deduction. 3.
Be sure to check spelling, grammar and punctuation.
The ability to make personal connections is paramount for reflection. Ensure, where necessary, that you are speaking from a personal place using “I” and not externalizing by using “you”.
