2-2 Activity: Topic Introduction Topic: The advent of smartphones The advent of smartphones has had a significant impact on the world, particularly in the context of globalization. These devices have fundamentally transformed the way people communicate, shop, conduct banking, share information, and even travel. In simple terms, smartphones have become the preferred tools that individuals use to stay connected with their families, friends, business associates, and the global community. While smartphones offer numerous advantages, there are also drawbacks associated with these compact devices that have integrated themselves into our daily lives. According to an article on NationalGeographic.com, the constant connectivity and access to information provided by smartphones have turned these devices into something akin to a habit for hundreds of millions of users. Scientists are only beginning to explore this phenomenon, but their research suggests that we are becoming increasingly distracted, spending less time in the physical world, and becoming more deeply immersed in the virtual world (Bhattacharjee, 2021). Description of the Population To streamline the scope of my paper, I will concentrate on the global population of adult individuals, both male and female, aged 17 to 35. This selection is based on research findings showing that this age group consistently maintains the highest levels of smartphone ownership, irrespective of their location in advanced or emerging economies (Jay, 2023). Consequently, I have chosen this demographic as it presents a compelling opportunity to explore the various effects, both beneficial and adverse, that smartphones have had on individuals within this age range.

Social impact Modern society leverages the myriad conveniences provided by smartphones, such as maintaining connections with family and friends, facilitating financial transactions, participating in social media, and completing routine tasks without the requirement of returning to a home computer. Nonetheless, the extensive dependence on smartphones in society can also result in negative repercussions in individuals' personal lives. When people become deeply absorbed or distracted by their devices, their focus becomes fragmented. This fragmented attention can impede their capacity to be wholly engaged and responsive to their partners, which is an essential factor in nurturing intimacy (Blue, 2019) General education interdisciplinary lens I have selected the social sciences as my framework for examining the impact of smartphones. This choice felt intuitive because I'm convinced that smartphones have triggered some of the most profound societal changes. These devices have fundamentally reshaped and modernized our daily existence, making them a prime subject for analysis within the field of social sciences. The transformative influence of smartphones on our daily routines is unmistakable, and it is logical to investigate this phenomenon through the perspective of social sciences. Thesis statement: Analyzing smartphones from a social sciences perspective, it can be determined that they wield the most significant influence on the evolution of societies.
