Personal Narrative
The recent global COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on my life as it altered
my daily routines, affected my mental health, and reshaped my perspectives on personal and
professional relationships. The challenges I faced during the pandemic included mobility
constraints, working from home, isolation measures, and the closure of schools, non-essential
businesses, workplaces, and hospitality settings. While necessary to curb the spread of the virus,
such measures significantly disrupted my life as I experienced an increase in mental distress,
social isolation, and financial hardship. Also, I experienced exhaustion and stress from
navigating numerous pressures, as well as conflicting responsibilities with schooling, home, and
work, without my usual support networks, which greatly disrupted routines.
During the pandemic, I found it difficult to maintain positive relationships. For instance,
managing relationships with my siblings was not easy, especially due to the limited time for
socializing with our friends. Additionally, my relationship with my partner became the focus of
constant tensions. While I value spending more time with my partner, spending more time apart
was a source of conflict and disagreement. Moreover, I felt sad about the inability to see my
extended family, such as my cousins, uncles, aunts, and grandparents. Online communication
became the only way to connect with my extended family, although I still felt disappointed that
we could not communicate face-to-face. Sometimes, I felt drained by video calls and thus did not
enjoy communicating with my extended family online. Apart from family, I realized that my
friends’ support helped me to maintain positive mental health as well as well-being, although I
missed physical contact with my close friends. Having understanding and supportive colleagues
helped me deal with the stress of handling work and personal life simultaneously.
