Cultural Diversity Awareness Questionnaire
1. Based on your observations, how important is diversity and inclusion to Liza you
interviewed?
Liza owns a physiotherapy clinic in the lower mainland and boasts over 35
years of experience as a physiotherapist. All through her career, she faced the challenges of
rising in an industry dominated by males. Her success was supported by her steadfast
determination, broad knowledge, commitment to incessant learning, and resolute self-
assuredness. As a consequence, she has well-deserved reputation as an outstandingly skilled
physiotherapist.
For Liza, the values of diversity and inclusion hold significant importance. She
openly shared her personal experiences with me, emphasizing her desire to ensure that the
next generation can pursue their aspirations without encountering the unnecessary obstacles
of prejudice. She explained her reasoning to me, saying that "to have people from diverse
cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities" in the same setting helps to foster relationships
amongst co-workers. She also finds satisfaction in the fact that she is their leader.
2. Which metaphor in
Table 9.2
(i.e., melting pot, salad, or smorgasbord) would you
use to describe the way Liza approaches his or her followers? Give examples to
illustrate this metaphor.
If I were to select a metaphor to illustrate Liza's leadership style, I might choose
"smorgasbord." In her view, diversity is a profoundly positive concept in which everyone is
considered equal, accepted for their true selves, and warmly embraced in the workplace,
devoid of discrimination or negativity. Liza actively promotes her staff to celebrate their
religious holidays and events throughout the year, adorning the clinic to show support for
3
their beliefs. Additionally, she takes great interest in conversing with everyone about their
distinctive culinary traditions and dishes, eagerly learning about various cuisines to enrich
her culinary repertoire.
3. Do you think Liza holds any stereotypes about others? In what way do these affect
his or her leadership?
Liza possesses a remarkably transparent and candid perspective, which is
unequivocally clear. She appeared genuinely committed to treating all individuals as unique
and judged them based on their skills, abilities, and contributions rather than making
assumptions based on stereotypes. She avoids negative comments about an individual's
lifestyle, background, and culture. Her belief in the equality of everyone is evident in her
actions, as she takes careful steps to avoid stereotyping.
4. In what way does Liza try to make individuals who are different feel a part of the
organization? Give specific examples where relevant.
Since Liza seemed free from stereotypes, this positively impacted their leadership.
They fostered an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Liza
actively engaged in initiatives like mentoring, where they paired individuals from
underrepresented groups with experienced colleagues to support their professional growth.
Additionally, Liza encouraged open communication and feedback, ensuring that diverse
perspectives were heard and considered in decision-making processes.
As previously
mentioned, Liza allows her staff to decorate the office during their respective holidays. A
delightful instance of this is the Day of the Dead celebration. The entire office was adorned
with vibrant colors for the entire week, and even her receptionist painted their faces to
embrace the traditions associated with this Day wholeheartedly.

5. Do you think privilege is in any way related to how this person leads? Defend your
answer.
The concept of privilege does not even cross Liza's mind. During the interview, she
said to me, "If you do your best in your job, that is all that matters." She treats everybody in
her profession with equivalent respect and does not express favoritism to anyone.
