Assignment Purpose:
1.
Interview a partner by applying therapeutic communication skills with a
given scenario/simulation.
2.
Demonstrate knowledge and apply effective, therapeutic nurse-client
relationship- interview and data collection skills essential to the emerging
professional practical nurse in an interview process.
3.
Respond appropriately with therapeutic skills to the client’s core message,
helping the client explore thoughts and feelings.
Assignment Instructions:
The day of the “Interview”:
Your interview will be three to five minutes in length. The interview will be
based on the designated question.
Students will be advised if they will do a live interview or a video
submission based on their professors schedule and preferences.
Instructions for the Video Submission
Scan your environment:
Start your video and show a 360 scan
that includes a
scan of your desktop and reflection of your keyboard and screen
and a picture
of your student ID. You should not have any notes or textbooks during the interview.
Any interviews that are over practiced or scripted will receive a 0 grade we strongly
suggest recording the interview once to avoid this risk.
The video cannot be edited, videos that are edited will receive a
0 grade.
The interview should not last more than 5 minutes, only the first 5 minutes of
the video are graded.
The main goal is to have
a) An introduction that includes the elements from the rubric
b) A working phase where you demonstrate several different therapeutic skills
c)
A termination phase where you complete your interview including all the
components from the rubric
Assignment 3:
(Simulated) Therapeutic Interview-‘Therapeutic Communication Skills’
It is a good idea to practice this several times with a variety of the topics. Worry less
about your timing and more about your ability to include all elements of the
interview and demonstrate TNCR skills. Please view the sample provided.
Remember that it is important to have the camera show your face, not that of the
person you are interviewing. We are looking for your use of SOLER and your
appropriate non-verbal/verbal congruence.
Instructions for the inperson Interview
The interview should not last more than 5 minutes, the instructor will have a
timing device.
The main goal is to have:

you are to base your interview.

Stress and Coping:
Your client has struggled with stress related to the
recent COVID pandemic. As the nursing student interview your client to
determine the reason for their stress.
b.
Emotional Health:
Your client is having some symptoms of anxiety and
depression. As a nursing student, interview your client to determine their
perception of a possible source for their symptoms.
c.
Cultural Awareness:
Your client is finding it difficult to manage their
family responsibilities with their school work. As a nursing student
interview your client to determine where they feel things are conflicting.
d.
Lifestyle Changes:
Your client is finding it difficult to maintain a healthy
lifestyle after recovering from a recent illness. As a nursing student
interview your client to determine where they are struggling.

Grading: the professor will mark using the
