I have finished on time and my presentation was within 10 minutes time frame with the use of effective terminology and spoke clearly and in a professional manner.
Met the Alverno College Criteria for
Effective Speaking Commensurate the
Graduate Level (HCIP Learning Outcome 7)
Connected with audience through SPEAKING ON ONE’S FEET: As a professional, gives a consistent impression of communicating with the audience without reliance on scripted or memorized input in a variety of job-related contexts.
S
I have followed level 4 communication skills. The reason why I believe this is
because during the presentation, I did not read off slides verbatim, rather I explained the reasoning behind the information that was on the slide of the PowerPoint. Also, I made sure to make eye contact with my peers and instructor while presenting as a way to keep them engaged in my presentation
about the health care problem of inquiry which is obesity. I tried speaking as clearly as I could so my peers and professor can understand me better. I have also tried to work hard on my vocabulary for this presentation as well.
Connected with audience through ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING CONTEXT: As a professional, shows awareness of one’s own ideas as claims rather
than truths in the context of disciplinary/professional discourse.
S
I demonstrated this by explaining the research findings in my own words rather than reading the sentences from the actual research articles. I also differentiated between facts and claims based on the findings so my peers and
instructor can be aware of what is facts as presented by the research articles and my ideas in terms of recommendations for weight reduction in obese individuals. Connected with audience through VERBAL EXPRESSION: As a professional, • Effectively incorporates word choice/style/tone unique to a particular discipline or profession. • Shows explicit awareness of ambiguity, e.g.,
that words/concepts may have different S
I have used selected Level 4 speaking criteria to make a credible presentation and connected with the audience through verbal expression by using proper soft tone and showing facial expressions about information in a professional manner because those expressions can reinforce the message. I also demonstrated openness in my presentation as I asked my peer and instructor if they had any questions after I was done presenting my research findings.
meanings for different audiences. • Maintains the individuality of the speaker.
• Communicates a sense of ongoing dialogue,
common ground, and openness to other perspectives. Connected with the audience through EFFECTIVE DELIVERY (speaking with credibility demonstrated through adequate volume and voice projection, clear articulation, vocal variety, use of gestures/body language, eye contact, and projection of interest in topic and audience): As a professional, meets the delivery requirements of a given discipline or profession. S
I have spoken with a refined repertory of effective delivery techniques to engage the audience during my presentation. I have also demonstrated through an adequate amount of volume, proper body language, soft tone, and an equal amount of voice projection to share my information professionally.
Connected with the audience through use of APPROPRIATE CONVENTIONS (usage, pronunciation, sentence structure, citing and documenting sources): As a professional, meets the stylistic requirements of a given discipline or profession.
S
I have spoken in complete sentences when needed to help my presentation flow well. I have also kept the sentences short and avoided any run-on sentences, this way I have kept my presentation direct and to the point, covering the main findings. I have also cited the appropriate sources using the
APA manual appropriately. Connected with audience through PURPOSEFUL STRUCTURE (sense of introduction/development/ conclusion; focusing by main point made; major/minor connections): As a professional, maintains a refined sense of structure in relation to an academic framework integrated into that of a profession.
S
I have created my presentation following the HCIP guidelines starting from the Introduction, Background, Significance, PICOT question, Method, Analysis, Discussion, and Conclusion precisely using simple wordings and sentences to make it flow nicely. I have kept the main findings in the presentation and have avoided including long sentences or any unnecessary information. This way, I have kept the presentation to the point and it also keeps my fellow peer’s attention along with the instructors. Connected with audience through SUPPORT FOR A POSITION/DEVELOPMENT OF AN IDEA: As a professional, explicitly acknowledges contradictory or conflicting evidence.
S
I have researched from an MSN-prepared nurse’s standpoint. I have taken a position for the reduction of obesity using the combination of nutritional intervention and physical activity in adults aged 18 to 49 years of age with weight loss. I have also compared my chosen intervention against the intervention of diet only. Connected with audience through S
I have cleared a clean and simple presentation to present my research findings
CREATION and USE OF MULTI-
MEDIA: As a professional, meets expectations for media quality for a given profession.
to my classmates and my instructor. I have used various graphics to capture my audience’s attention and to also make my slides look more neat and clean.
I have chosen neutral colors for my PowerPoint presentation to avoid any unnecessary distractions bright colors may cause to my classmates or the instructor. Connected with the audience through ORIGINAL AND APPROPRIATE CONTENT: As a professional,
• Effectively integrates academic frameworks/theories into the context of the profession • Thoughtfully challenges existing frameworks and/or approaches S
I have presented appropriate content which I have researched by using scholarly articles and I didn’t verbalize or write my thoughts or feelings in PowerPoint presentation. I have described Pender’s health promotional model
that is related to my chosen health problem of interest which is obesity because the framework conceptualizes the nature of the research problem which is obesity, its basis, and the analysis to investigate the problem.
