Oral Presentation on Research Paper
What is your topic?
How technology affects our brains and makes us addicted.
What is your thesis?
Social media has a negative impact on people's brain functions and can make them more
susceptible to addiction.
What are examples of your arguments?
One argument is that social media addicts have a low attention span, which leads to them
being less productive in school or work. Another example of my argument is that social media
addicts have difficulty focusing on one thing at a time. This can be attributed to the fact that they
are constantly browsing through their social media feeds without paying attention to what they
are seeing, which leads to an obsession with social media. A third example of my argument is
that social media addicts lack self control because they cannot resist checking their phones every
few minutes just in case someone has interacted with them online.
What is the analysis to that evidence?
The evidence I provided shows that social media has an adverse effect on people's brain
functions, which ultimately causes them to become addicted to it. We see this phenomenon all
around us as people constantly check their phones while driving or even while walking down the
street; they seem incapable of separating themselves from their devices even when they are not
required to use them. This is a dangerous situation because it puts people's lives at risk, and it
could lead to an increase in car accidents, pedestrian injuries and other types of accidents that are
preventable if people could just put down their phones for a few minutes.

What secondary source/s did you find most beneficial to support your argument?
In the book "Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe," Roger McNamee (2010)
discusses how technology can alter our brains to become constantly addicted to social media.
Facebook has been a pioneer in the study and development of technologies that may be used to
manipulate information and alter the experiences of users. As a consequence, a system has
emerged that is not democratic and that makes it possible for political manipulation to take place
using an algorithm. This implies that we are receiving information skewed about politics and
current events. The smooth operation of democracies is hampered as a result.
What did you find particularly interesting?
The majority of people find that social media is a valuable source of information, yet it
has the potential to have a detrimental impact on people's brains in unanticipated ways.
What was the conclusion of your paper?
People are constantly browsing through their social media feeds without paying attention
to what they are seeing, which leads to an obsession with social media. The American Academy
of Pediatrics has admitted that the use of social media applications like Facebook, Instagram, and
Snapchat has affected the minds of a significant number of adolescents.
