TIPS FOR FAMILIES IN SUPPORTING THE STUDENT THROUGH ASSESSMENT RESULTS ADDITIONAL RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES ASSESSMENT TOOLS IN THIS NEWSLETTER: CURRENT TECHNOLOGY-BASED ASSESSMENT TOOL & HOW IT WORKS FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF this tool THE I-READY ASSESSMENT SUITE IS A COLLECTION OF TOOLS TO HELP STUDENTS WITH MATH AND READING FROM KINDERGARTEN TO 12TH GRADE. IT INCLUDES A TEST TO SEE HOW WELL STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THESE SUBJECTS AND A TEST FOR READING IN SPANISH. THERE ARE ALSO TESTS TO MEASURE HOW WELL STUDENTS READ OUT LOUD AND A TOOL TO SCREEN FOR DYSLEXIA. TEACHERS CAN USE THE INFORMATION FROM THESE TESTS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT GRADE LEVEL THEIR STUDENTS ARE PERFORMING AT, ACCORDING TO THE STANDARDS SET BY THE STATE AND THE COUNTRY. I-READY HAS DIFFERENT WAYS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS TO USE IT AND LEARN. THIS CAN HELP TEACHERS UNDERSTAND WHAT EACH STUDENT NEEDS TO LEARN AND MAKE A PLAN JUST FOR THEM TO GET BETTER BY THE END OF THE YEAR. PROVIDES FAIR AND ACCESSIBLE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERY STUDENT. Saves Time for all educators Gives teachers helpful reports. Creates differentiated instruction ACCESSABLE for every classroom SOME STUDENTS MAY FEEL OVERWHELMED WHEN USING A TOOL THAT RELIES ON TECHNOLOGY. SOME STUDENTS MIGHT NOT FIND IT INTERESTING. SOME STUDENTS MAY HAVE DIFFICULTIES USING TECHNOLOGY CORRECTLY. IF TEACHERS ARE NOT TRAINED WELL, THEY MAY HAVE DIFFICULTY UNDERSTANDING DATA. POTENTIAL DRAWBACKS OF THIS TOOL IN THE PAST FEW YEARS, NEW TECHNOLOGIES HAVE BEEN CREATED TO MAKE TEACHING AND TESTING EASIER IN CLASSROOMS. USING TECHNOLOGY IN CLASSROOM ASSESSMENTS CAN GIVE TEACHERS MORE OPTIONS THAN TRADITIONAL TESTS. THIS INCLUDES THINGS LIKE GIVING STUDENTS FEEDBACK QUICKLY AND SUGGESTING WHAT THEY SHOULD WORK ON NEXT. TEACHERS CAN USE THIS INFORMATION RIGHT AWAY TO DECIDE HOW THEY SHOULD TEACH THINGS DIFFERENTLY. (NEUMANN ET AL., 2019). FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED EXTRA HELP IN SCHOOL, USING TECHNOLOGY FOR TESTS AND ASSESSMENTS CAN BE MORE INTERESTING AND GIVE THEM MORE OPTIONS TO SHOW WHAT THEY KNOW. THESE TOOLS CAN ALSO HELP MAKE IT EASIER FOR TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS TO MONITOR DATA. THIS HELPS THEM PLAN INSTRUCTION THAT MEETS THE NEEDS OF EACH STUDENT. HOW DOES THIS ASSESSMENT TOOL MINIMIZE BIAS IN THE CLASSROOM? I-READY WAS MADE SO THAT EVERYONE CAN USE IT AND HAVE EQUAL ACCESS TO IT. STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES WERE INVOLVED IN TRYING OUT AND MAKING IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PRODUCT. THE READING MATERIALS DO NOT SUPPORT POPULAR CULTURE.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS: GIVES INFORMATION ABOUT TESTING IN SPECIAL EDUCATION. THIS SHOW HELPS FAMILIES UNDERSTAND AND FULFILL THEIR RESPONSIBILITY AS THE MAIN DECISION MAKERS FOR THEIR CHILD'S EDUCATION. THE INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAM (IEP) EVERY STUDENT WHO GETS EXTRA HELP AT SCHOOL HAS A PLAN CALLED AN IEP. IT IS A WRITTEN PLAN FOR SCHOOL THAT IS MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR EACH STUDENT (2022-B). THE IEP INCLUDES A SECTION CALLED PLAAFP THAT TALKS ABOUT HOW THE STUDENT IS DOING IN SCHOOL AND IN OTHER AREAS. THIS TELLS US HOW WELL THE STUDENT IS DOING IN SCHOOL RIGHT NOW AND HOW THEIR DISABILITY AFFECTS THEIR LEARNING AND PROGRESS IN THE REGULAR CURRICULUM (2022-B). I-READY’S DIAGNOSTIC TEST HELPS TEACHERS UNDERSTAND HOW WELL A STUDENT IS DOING IN MATH AND READING AT THEIR CURRENT GRADE LEVEL. YOU CAN ADD THIS INFORMATION TO THE PLAAFP PART OF THE IEP. THE IEP, TIPS, & RESOURCES HOW DO FORMAL ASSESSMENTS AFFECT THE CONTENT OF IEPS? THE PLAAFP PART OF AN IEP HELPS DECIDE WHAT GOALS ARE RIGHT FOR THE STUDENT. IT SHOULD SHOW WHAT THE STUDENT IS GOOD AT AND NOT SO GOOD AT IN SCHOOL. EACH PERSON ON THE IEP TEAM CAN ADD THEIR INPUT TO THE PLAAFP. BUT SPECIFICALLY, FORMAL ASSESSMENTS SHOULD BE USED AS A PROPER WAY TO SHOW WHAT A STUDENT CAN DO AT THIS MOMENT (MAURO, 2021). ASSESSMENTS CAN TELL US HOW WELL A STUDENT IS DOING IN SCHOOL AND OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL.. I-READY AND IEPS ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR FAMILIES ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR CHILD'S EDUCATION, ASK FOR AN EXPLANATION. COMMUNICATION IS KEY KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER, SCHOOL, AND OTHERS WHO HELP WITH THEIR EDUCATION. TAKE PART IN IEP MEETINGS. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS The school must give you rights and protections under the IDEA law if you have a disability. PARENTAL READINESS AND EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM (PREP): HELPS CHILDREN FROM LOW-INCOME AND MINORITY BACKGROUNDS IN CERTAIN AREAS. THEY ASSIST PARENTS IN GETTING MORE INVOLVED IN THEIR CHILD'S EDUCATION AND SHOW THEM HOW TO EFFECTIVELY SUPPORT THEIR CHILDREN.
