My scores for the VARK Questionnaire are as follows; 1. Visual – 9 2. Aural – 9 3. Read/Write – 8 4. Kinesthetic – 12 Yes. I agree with the results. I prefer to learn by doing the activity myself. That way, I can easily notice the mistakes and correct them in the process. Therefore, usage of models and following instructions on the manual as I use the product is preferred to listening to audios. What is your communication style? I am a passive communicator. I do not like to get into confrontations with other people. I also prefer peaceful communication that is full of understanding and respect. Respecting each other’s rights is an essential part of communication in my view. I also do not like to impose my beliefs and conceptions on other people. What implicit biases do you have? 1. Gender-science IAT
I took the Gender-science IAT which reveals the link between liberal arts and females and between science and males. After taking the test, the responses revealed a slight automatic association for male with liberal arts and female with science. I do not agree with the results. I tend to think that males are more associated with science while females with liberal arts. 2. Race IAT The second IAT was Race IAT. The test helps to distinguish between European and African origin faces. The results of the test revealed that I have moderate automatic preference for white people over black people. I think that is wrong because myself I am not a white person. I believe I am race neutral and not have a preferential race. What is your conflict management style? 1. Accommodating – it is about keeping peace instead of being right and prolonging the conflict. Accommodating conflict management style is seen as a weak method of resolving conflict and I do not agree with it. 2. Avoiding – in avoiding, it aims to resolve conflict by ignoring it. Evading conflict is not the right way to resolve conflict. I do not agree with it because it builds up unresolved issues that may blow up eventually. 3. Compromising – This style seeks for a middle ground where both parties accept some level of fault. Accepting mistakes allows for a solution to be found. I like it because it helps resolve conflicts quickly. In the end, there is an understanding on each other’s perspective. 4. Competing – this is my most preferred conflict management style. The style rejects compromise and ensures one of the parties must concede to the other. In management, it is prominent because it shows strength and will to lead people.
5. Collaboration – collaboration Is long-term and seeks a win-win situation. In the end, everyone is satisfied with the outcome of the resolution. Professional Behaviors of the 21 st century High performance areas 1. Good communication 2. Good time-keeping skills 3. Integrity and hard work Low performance areas 1. Poor conflict management style 2. Overthinking 3. Lack of sufficient exercise. Create a plan Introduction It is difficult to identify bad behavior from a personal perspective. Most of the times, these behaviors are noted by others. However, after a thorough analysis, the noted low performance areas were poor conflict management style, overthinking, and lack of sufficient physical exercise. Develop low performing areas To develop the low performing areas will require dedication. The first step is to attend a leadership training and specifically base on conflict management at the workplace. The training will provide simulations of real-world conflicts and how to handle them. My goal is to shift from competing style to collaborating. The overthinking aspect will require reading of books to gain different perspectives about issues and life.
