Week 5 Discussion Part
Filters have the ability to influence our listening as they can alter how one views and
interprets any information. From the class text, our experiences and attitudes have the power to
influence filters which can bar effective or active listening since they can distort or stop an
important message from reaching the intended party. Filters can hinder one from understanding
and interpreting information appropriately especially when one already has a negative attitude
towards something or subject (Julian, 2011).
Interpersonal communication should entail seamless conversation with no barrier to
understanding. Listening filters are key features to consider in this case as they have the power to
hinder effective communication. Listening filters influences how people receive, perceive and
process information. One needs to understand and beware of their filters to determine potential
barriers to interpersonal communication and maintain their openness and objective of
communication (Usera et al., 2021). Failing to consider listening filters may render
communication invalid since it may attract misunderstanding or misjudgment and conflict.
I think the filter of values and beliefs can greatly impact my interpersonal listening. This
is because this is a unique filter that can influence how I view the my surrounding and interpret
information. This filter enables me to be choosy of the information that I deem useful or
interesting and that which is in line with my values and beliefs and neglecting that which I find
contradictory. By aligning to the message that I value, I cannot misinterpret or misunderstand
factors evolving around it.
