Report
Interviewer Name: <Alvin Agolla> Interviewee Name: <Mr. Sulentic> Interview Date & Time: <July 20, 2018 at 12:30pm> Interview Location: <CBRE 555 E Lancaster Ave Suite 120, Radnor, PA> Interview for communication in environment cleaning The information that was gathered from an interview with Mr. Sulentic who works for CBRE group inc, goes into depth about how he spends the day advocating sustainable solutions and the challenges he is faced with everyday in communicating environmental awareness When asked the question, “ What does sustainability mean to you? And how do you communicate it to the public?” He stated, “It means going back to a much more natural, simpler, slower way of life and for us all to realize that we can use up far less of this Earth’s resources if only we put some thought into it! Communicators who want their messages to be received clearly and accurately will remove as much environmental noise as possible.” I learned that with the increase in environmental awareness amongst the public, more companies have integrated environmentally conscious and pro-sustainability messages into their marketing and communications with stakeholders. In order to succeed in my recommendation report on environmental communication, I need to possess a combination of research skills and environmental science, the ability to write clear and compelling content, and an understanding of the underlying mission of environmental communication, which is to help people navigate their relationship with the natural world in a way that advances humans’ interests while also protecting the environment. “What is your opinion on environmental communication in politics, government, and advocacy?” Mr. Sulentic said, “Everyone has their own agenda and opinion and way of looking at things. My wanting to clear up as much of this shameful harvest from our throwaway lifestyles and to inspire others to do the same has lead to people having all kinds of misconceptions about what l do and why l do it. l don’t have time to debate much of their over-thinking or basically wrong views on what I try to achieve. l am into focusing on the issue and working with good people with positive energy to get the task done! As politicians debate topics such as climate change, oil drilling, water safety, and waste
management, government departments such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the National Park Service use environmental communication every day to develop, implement, and promote regulations and initiatives to protect the environment.” This helped me with my report because I realized I need to utilize environmental communication in its various forms to reach various audience members. I learned that professionals in environmental communication should know how to combine principles of research, media production, and editing with an understanding of key environmental issues, the natural sciences, and how environmental factors connect to human behavior, psychology, politics, and economics. When asked the question, “What are the most important skills for an environmental specialist?” Mr. Sulentic said, "I believe the most important skills for an environmental specialist are communication, research, organization and leadership. Environmental specialists must be able to communicate with the public about local issues, research potential solutions, manage projects and lead teams to resolve problems. I am a strong leader who is good at coordinating tasks and making sure that all necessary research and preparation is done." I learned that It is important to communicate the topic on a rational and an emotional level. Facts count and are undeniable. However, to really address the necessary feeling of urgency and encourage action, we need to address the topic in an emotional way, talking about the extinction of marine life and eco-culture and the harm to our future generations. This will help me introduce the problem to people who might not be aware of the problem, or even worse who might not care? When asked the question, “How did you communicate your most recent environmental problem?” Mr.Sulentic stated, “I worked on a team that was tasked with finding alternative solutions to disposing of our company's trash. I also raised awareness about the problem of littering among the local youth. Another amazing feeling is to watch the children join us cleaning up. How much fun they have, how eager they are to learn and how concerned they are about the environment.” Knowing how to communicate with the public is important because the citizens' involvement in environmental management and protection depend, largely, on their level of awareness about environmental issues. This helped me with understanding implementation of communication practices that are related to the environment. I also learned that some of them are easy to alter whereas, some may prove to be tough obstacles in the process of effective communication.
