Discuss the comment that “terrorists want to be judged on their statements, but they are in fact judged on their actions.” What was the goal of the group “the Weatherman” and what can be learned about the formation of terror groups from the Weatherman? What is the normal life-span of a terrorist group? Provide two examples of a terror group’s life span. Does your analyze support Crenshaw’s theory that the average life span in democracies of a terror organizations is 6.5 years. Also discuss the methods and tactics used by the two groups you have selected. Terrorist use their actions as a fear tactic to prove their point and believe these actions are necessary. For example, bin Laden reason for attacking the United States, was to force them to leave Islamic lands and Israel. His actions included killing innocent Americans. Americans conclude that based on Osama bin Laden actions, he was crazy, deranged, and considered a mass murderer who focused on killing as many Americans as possible. I believe that bin Laden motives were evil and to do harm, but he was a smart and educated man who focused on reestablishing the Islamic caliphate free from foreign control. The Weatherman terrorist group was formed in the 1960s on the University of Michigan’s campus, and was believed to have started because of dismantling of earlier legal protests. Their focus was mainly bombing government buildings, but after the Vietnam War ended, this group became non-existence with the help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). They were most active from 1969 to 1975, and took up the calling of oppressed people from all around. The Weatherman terrorist group relied on popular support and the strength of a solid message against the government (Reich, 1998). References Reich, W. (1998).
